The process starts with burning the raw wood, until it is charred🔥Then the wood is wire brushed to remove the ash. Lastly a water based finish is applied. 🖤🤌 Perfection @superframe

I was awarded the Superframe Framing Fund and we worked closely together to achieve the unique Shou Sugi Ban technique on my frames.

Shou Sugi Ban is a traditional Japanese wood preservation technique that involves charring the surface of cedar, then brushing and sealing it with oil. The process is typical for exterior surfaces and makes the wood more resistant to water, fire, and insects.
We applied the same technique to ash wood in favour of using a hard wood rather than a soft wood for strength.

This new work came from photos taken on late-night walks in Kyoto, Tokyo and Seoul, when illumination transformed each city. Convenience store runs, snacks from night markets, and brief detours before returning to the hotel were moments of pause within the constant motion and unfamiliarity of being somewhere new. The energy of the city falls away. What remains are quiet scenes that left an imprint, tactile snapshots as a record of those summer nights.
