we released the first single of @freekeychoir ‘s debut studio album yesterday! it’s called Ghost Drawn and it’s written and sung beautifully by @waterstrider . I spent so many hours putting this thing together with so many amazing people and it feels so great to finally be able to show it to the world. it features @nuxia_nuxia on piano and @lewispatzner on cello, and was beautifully mixed by @itinerant_home (who also contributed some production and bass clarinet), the choir recording was engineered by @george_corytodd at @tiny.telephone , it was mastered by @ummm_r with artwork by @lianerrzz with help in that department from @nnnaaathan and @zachisballs12 . come hear it performed live during our shows at the end of the month!

tickets for the next @freekeychoir shows are now live!! it's called Free Key Forever and it is a retrospective show featuring a collection of songs from throughout our choir's history. since it began in October of 2022, we have brought 40 new choral compositions into this world, the majority of them arrangements of songs by local songwriters. my life has changed so much since starting this project and I'm so excited to celebrate how far it has come by doing some of these songs again. this poster was designed by @shalaladu with illustrations by @suverband . tickets are available at freekeychoir.com, and I would recommend buying them sooner rather than later as these shows consistently sell out!
premiering a new work called Big Window with the Sacramento-based treble choir @vox_musica conducted by @danielpaulson with a solo by @amandasingsthings this weekend in Sacramento! It's a wintry tune that I set to words by @emilybrownmusic and I'm so excited to share it with the world! I am going to be there with family and friends on the Sunday, 12/21, show at 5:00 pm at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. would love to see some other familiar faces there!
Vox Musica is one of my longest running collaborators and such a Sacramento gem. We're so excited to perform Derek Sup's new original composition, Big Window, during DREAM: A Vox Christmas and the Quiet Miracle of Hope.
"I chose to set Emily Brown’s poem Big Window because it encapsulates my favorite feeling of the winter season. It isn’t an explicitly religious poem, but to me really embodies the feeling of Advent, the waiting period before Christmas, which is aligned with the transition of fall into winter. Emily’s poem is a depiction of waiting and watching as the world around us slows down, and us with it, with its shortening days and colder weather. I reflect this in the long, drawn out rhythms and phrases of the music, and the vagueness of key center. The sonorities often lack thirds or quality defining tones, and alternatively are often in the forms of either open intervals or clusters. The effect for me is a feeling of stillness, or hallowedness. 'All stilled, patient, keeping keep.'" - Derek Sup, Vox Composer in Residence
