My May SF&F Subscription finally arrived! It’s absolutely beautiful! Thank you so much @thebrokennbinding for the care and the thought that is carefully put into each box. It arrived quickly, securely, and in perfect shape! @sunyidean I am so excited to read “The Girl with a Thousand Faces”.
I can’t wait to see what you have in store for June!
No expense spared for this launch 🤣 (Don’t worry, I put the money towards welcome drinks and pizza instead!)
Edit to add, I am also bringing a non allergen Free From cake (/chocolate-cake-baking-mix/ with sunflower oil and oat milk) for those who need it, and there will be vegan / gf food options later in the night, too!)
See you all tomorrow!
Look at this beauty, it arrived in the Sci-fi/fantasy sub-box from @thebrokennbinding .
The Girl With A Thousand Faces, by @sunyidean
This one was a complete surprise for me, but a VERY pleasant one.
One of my favourite books of 2022 was The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean - her debut novel and a very unexpected(but welcome) Urban Fantasy for me.
It was incredible and had a unique take on the vampire mythology, with some very hard hitting moments as it explored Patriarchal Abuse and Motherhood...
There was also plenty of discussion around the flavours and textures of books! I had an absolute blast reading this one with my "Not A Book Club" at the time!
This will be her second novel and it also sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun!
(Check final slides for endpapers, artwork and a reversible dust-jacket!)

Synopsis:
1975 - HONG KONG
Do you like ghost stories, little sister?
Sit down, get comfortable.
You haven't heard this one before.
Mercy Chan is a triad exorcist with a mysterious past. After washing up on the shores of Hong Kong with no memory during World War II, she found a home in Kowloon Walled City, an infamous, ghost-infested slum full of lost and traumatised civilians. Since the war ended, Mercy has rebuilt her life and found work as a ghost-talker for the local triad, dealing with the angry and bitter spirits who haunt this place.
But the past she can't remember won't let her go. An unusually powerful ghost lurks in Kowloon's waterways, drowning innocents and threatening the district. Unnervingly, it claims to know Mercy - and her forgotten childhood.
As Mercy is drawn into a deadly cat-and-mouse game with this malignant spirit, she begins to realise that the monster she fights within these walls may well be one of her own making.
A breathtaking historical fantasy where ancient myths and local legends combine in a story of ghosts, grief and women who will not forgive.

This was such a fun one! We got to hang out with iconic author and fellow podcaster Sunyi Dean! We talked all about The Girl With a Thousand Faces, what it’s like to publish a sophomore novel, and ghost stories! 👻 @sunyidean thanks for such a fun episode!
You can find the ep in my stories, or wherever you listen to your podcasts!
*holds book like men hold fish on dating profiles* (kinda!?)
I read The Book Eaters three or four years ago, back when I was still early in my bookish creator era, and I remember being genuinely impressed by how original it felt. A world where people literally consume books for sustenance and knowledge… with a social system that’s brutally stacked, especially against women? It had some really sharp parallels to the way women have historically been boxed in and controlled, and that stuck with me especially through the lens of English society.
So when I saw The Girl With a Thousand Faces was on the horizon, I didn’t even overthink it—I signed up for the tour.
Huge thank you to @storygramtours for having me and sending this along, because I already know this is the kind of weird, thoughtful speculative fiction I want more of on my shelf.
What’s it about?:
The Girl With a Thousand Faces follows a woman who can change her appearance—again and again—slipping through identities as easily as other people change clothes.
But when you can be anyone, the real question becomes: who’s using you, who’s hunting you, and what happens when you don’t know which face is actually yours?

Lovely people, beautiful days, gorgeous food, and a stunning dog who I’m still in love with (SORRY GWEN) ❤️😅 We shall reconvene again in July - for the wedding 🤓
