Fall/Winter" by acclaimed American artist Kiki Smith (b. 1954) can be found on the third floor of the Scoville Learning Center on campus. The work, a photogravure, aquatint, etching, and drypoint print, was generously gifted by Sheldon Hurst in honor of Nancy Benway's 24 years of dedicated service as administrative assistant at SUNY Adirondack. Born in Nuremberg, Germany, Smith is the daughter of American sculptor Tony Smith and actress and opera singer Jane Lawrence. Her work engages with themes of sex, birth, and regeneration, while her more recent pieces explore the human condition in relation to the natural world. A multidisciplinary artist, Smith works across printmaking, sculpture, drawing, and textiles, and her work has been exhibited internationally throughout her four-decade career.

The high-tech Anatomy and Physiology lab Professor Ann Miele helped design at SUNY Adirondack leaves her colleagues at larger institutions a little envious.
“The lab has the latest technology and is arguably the best anatomy and physiology lab I have seen,” she said.
That space is a far cry from the days the 30-year employee of SUNY Adirondack taught in an outdated space that sometimes had mice and even an occasional bat. “The campus has completely transformed,” she marveled. “Multiple buildings have been added and many have been remodeled.”
Ann didn’t plan to become an educator. While finishing up a bachelor’s degree in biology at The College of Saint Rose, her advisor suggested she take education courses. That led her to teaching high school biology and embracing a new career path (and earning two master’s degrees). She taught as an adjunct at Broome Community College. When she saw a job listing for an A&P professor at SUNY Adirondack, she knew it was meant for her.
“A full-time tenure-track position teaching my favorite subject and, it just so happened, it was also located in my favorite area, the Adirondacks and closer to family,” she said. “It was the perfect situation for me, so I took the job.”
Throughout the three decades she has been at SUNY Adirondack, Ann has had great experiences with faculty, staff and students.
“I love what I do and I still feel I can make a difference,” she said.

Area students participated in Let's Go STEM on Tuesday morning, a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) program co-presented by the Adirondack Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and SUNY Adirondack Continuing Education. It was held on the SUNY Adirondack campus and highlights opportunities for women in STEM fields.
