I think my quick bounces of scratch tracks are starting to sound better than the mixes I spent hours on this time last year, so we’ll call that progress! Been actively trying to spend more time at my desk lately and make use of all these fancy plugins, some of which my pals made! Some of which they were even nice enough to gift to me! I should really send those dudes a fruit basket or something. Specifically oranges. Specifically Valencia oranges. Those are juice oranges!

What a ride. 3 years ago I answered a frantic message to fill in last second for a photography gig in Vancouver for some friends back in Toronto running an event here from across the country. For about a year I’d answer similar calls and lend a hand behind the lens, getting to meet a ton of people out on the west coast who grew up on the same music I did. Somewhere between 2023 and 2024 I started DJing the events and this brought me onto stages not only in Vancouver, but also in Calgary, Regina, Toronto, Kelowna, and even over to Vancouver Island to run emo nights in Victoria. Very grateful for all the friendships I made across the country and all the memories from these nights over the last 3 years. Thanks @emonightnorth for the trust and the motivation and for giving kids-at-heart all over the country something to do (the folks in the smaller cities always made a point to tell me how much they appreciated having ENN bring something new and exciting into town for the weekend). Thanks for bringing people out to venues (we need support in these spaces now even more than ever) and finally, thanks for reminding me how much I missed jumping around a stage and encouraging people to run into each other. Hopefully next time I’m on some of those stages again I’ll have a guitar in hand or I’ll be telling some silly jokes (including my modernized Norm MacDonald tribute bit about answering machines; it always kills), but either way I hope to see familiar faces in the crowd looking at least half as happy as they did during these ENN events. Rad weekend. Had Milo from Descendents come for a tour of our lab and afterward he was kind enough to invite me out for their show that evening. Very cool experience and we had so much to chat about, given our nerdy science backgrounds and propensity for yelling into microphones over loud guitars and fast drums. He asked so many interesting questions about my work and was kind enough to answer my questions for him thoughtfully with all of his experience balancing a love for (and career in) science with his passion for music. Awesome dude, that guy is. Also got an extra copy of Milo Goes To College signed for my pal Nick, since it didn’t seem fair that I’d have one and he wouldn’t, given that he introduced me to Descendents over a decade ago now. “Listen to your favourite bands’ favourite bands.”

August was fun! A lot of standing up, but also some sitting down. The occasional lie down as well. We in the biz call that ✨range✨, baby!!!! Was hoping to sneak in a little Italy trip before the year’s end, but maybe next summer. Besides, we have Italy at home!!!! (Coastal British Columbia)
