There's been lots of excitement around our launch for Better Buses for KC. But, what is Better Buses for KC?
We've spent months speaking with bus riders, impacted leaders, and everyday people about what Kansas City's dream bus system looks like. A system that centers the most impacted community members and fulfills our missions of Climate, Racial and Economic Justice.
The fact is, every Kansas Citian deserves a dignified, reliable, safe and green bus system that allows us to access everything we need to thrive in our lives.
It is because of this that by 2025, Sunrise Movement KC demands fast, reliable, green, public buses for everyone in Kansas City.
Our demands:
1. Every Kansas City resident will live within ten-minute walking distance of a fast, frequent, reliable bus line.
2. Buses will come every 15 minutes and always be on time.
3. Public mass transit will be powered by good, dignified, unionized jobs.
4. Zero Fare forever.
5. All buses will be electrified.
6. All bus stops will be clean, accessible, and provide protection from the elements, with sidewalks, benches, and real-time transit information.

DONāT LEAVE US IN THE DARK JACKSON COUNTY: FUND BUSES!
Take action and email Jackson County Legislature! smvmt.org/jacobuses . The link is in our bio!!
We deserve Better Buses! Help us put pressure on Jackson County to create a permanent fund for transit. Currently, Jackson County has zero dedicated funding for transit. We want Jackson County legislators to commit to putting to vote a sales tax to fund our buses. Please email Jackson County legislators at smvmt.org/jacobuses to demand that they fund our buses and guarantee the transportation we deserve!
Without additional funding, our buses are set to face major cuts to routes and services. We know that itās possibleāKCMO is scheduled to put to vote an increased sales tax in order to fund a new jail. Tell our legislators that we need Better Buses, not more jails!
Our demands are simple:
* Every Kansas City resident will live within a ten-minute walking distance of a fast, frequent, reliable bus line.Ā
* Buses will come every 15 minutes and always be on time.Ā
* Public mass transit will be powered by good, dignified, unionized jobs.Ā
* Zero Fare forever.Ā
* All buses will be electrified.Ā
* All bus stops will be clean, accessible, and provide protection from the elements, including benches, sidewalks, and real-time transit information.
Join Sunrise Movement KC to become a part of the change that is coming!
š„š 250 of us took to city hall this afternoon to demand what we deserve - fully funded public transit
We delivered this message to Mayor Q and city council alongside @atucomms@standupkc , Allied Workers of the Blind & more.
When we come together as union workers, bus riders, low-wage workers, students, & more, fighting for our collective futures, we put fear into the politicians & bosses that stand in our way.
This fight is not over, but we know when the people stand as one, WE hold the power.

We are currently experiencing the expansion of the police and surveillance state in the name of the World Cup, from an ever-increasing police budget to federal surveillance investment.
When cities host large sporting events like the World Cup or the Olympics, the money poured into public āsafetyā leaves behind an extensive surveillance network and a militarized police force that are used against vulnerable communities.
KCPD says: āitās not just about security for the World Cup. Itās setting a new standard for how major cities use security apparatuses in the future.ā
We are told this is āsafetyā. Yet safety is not measured in drones, razor wire, or police overtime hours. Safety is measured in whether people have stable housing, whether mental crises are met with care, and whether neighbors know each other by name. Safety is meeting people in crisis with resources and compassion instead of force and punishment.
We deserve safety before, during, and after the World Cup. Instead of relying on policing and incarceration, true safety means giving real power and resources to the people and organizations who will actually live with and beyond the consequences of the games: tenants, community-based organizations, and neighborhoods. They bring the relationship-networks and lived experiences that make us safer and more connected than weāve ever been.
If safety is the goal, the question becomes what we invest ināmore surveillance and cuffs or care and community that addresses root causes. Safety isnāt built in a month. The World Cup will be temporary. The choices we make will not.

āWe only get what we are organized to take!ā šŖ
Thatās the call one of our leaders put out on May Day as hundreds of Kansas Citians demanded workers over billionaires.
We have the power to change everything, but that requires us to collectively act as a communityāto get organized and demand that change!
Billionaires, corporations, politiciansāthey donāt care about us. They are leveraging their power to line their pockets while we suffer the impacts of climate change, while we get exploited and extracted from.
But, we care about us! Our communities are the bedrock of the world we can build and shape together, one in which we can thrive and create systems of care, not extraction.
So join us! Everyone is needed. Itās time to get organized. ā¤ļøāš„
May Day 2026 š„
From supporting a student walkout to hosting a teach in to getting loud at an anti-data center noise demo to coalescing at the mass rally, it was a day full of people power and demanding a world that works for ALL of us! šŖ
Thank you to all that showed up in support of these actions and that vision for Kansas City!
Need a place to direct all that post May Day energy?? Join us at Sunrise KC to fight for climate, racial, and economic justice ā”ļø bit.ly/JoinSunriseKC
Corporations are profiting from data centers while ignoring the harms caused to our communities. So this May Day, we brought the harms to the doorstep of the corporations responsible.
Evergy, our regionās main energy supplier, profits off the data centers that wreck our community. Not only that, but they are expanding their fossil fuel reliance in the face of climate crisis! Evergy expects their energy demand to DOUBLE in the next few yearsāall thanks to data centers. To meet that demand, they are building new gas power plants that will pollute our homes and harm our health.
So we got LOUD at Evergyās front door!
Data centers flood our communities with noise pollution that dramatically decreases our quality of life and threaten our health and environment.
We are demanding a data center moratorium in Kansas City! We canāt afford development that threatens our health, our planet, and our communities while the rich line their pockets.
No more dirty data centers built by billionaires in our backyards! ā
This May Day, these students walked out of school to demand their neighbors stop being kidnapped by ICE and that billionaires stop building data centers in their back yards.
They are demanding a future that isnāt risked by AI and expanded fossil-fuel reliance because of data centers, billionaire greed, and violent immigration enforcement.
Young people are done seeing their neighbors kidnapped by ICE, their parents struggle to get by, and their futures risked by self-serving politicians and billionaires. They donāt want to live in a city that gives public money that could be going to education and healthcare to billionaire-owned ballparks and data centers.
They are refusing to accept ābusiness as usual.ā And today they made their voices heard!
Huge shoutout to @moworkers for joining us in rallying around these students today!
