The brief said housing. We designed a community. New materials exist. New ways of thinking about structure, durability and reuse exist.
Yet many projects still follow the same logic they did 30 years ago.
Bocken in Oskarshamn is our attempt at a different answer.
A hybrid structure of timber and eco-concrete - reducing material use without compromising durability.
A facade designed to age evenly over time, not just look good on opening day.
A shared courtyard built around an existing tree, kept in place rather than removed.
We think architecture must evolve - not just in form, but in thinking.

The facade became the furniture.
Concrete elements removed from the facade were repurposed as furniture on site, turning material reuse into a defining gesture of the project.
Kustgatan 3 is the transformation of a 1960s building in Gothenburg that has previously served as hotel, offices and commercial spaces.
Reuse was central to the design.
The original facade of exposed seastone and concrete gives the building a strong identity. Carefully designed additions in warm-toned metal introduce a refined contrast to the rough existing materials, elevating the overall expression.
Through the introduction of new entrances and shared spaces, the building opens up to its surroundings, activating the adjacent areas and enhancing the sense of safety.

This week, the Magasin 7 competition was decided.
Our proposal - Aeternitas - didn’t begin with an idea about form.
It began with a question:
What’s already here, and what can it become?
The concrete frame of the former Eternit factory was the starting point. Not preserved for the sake of preservation - but kept as something to work with.
Then we cut. Opened up. Connected.
Architecture or surgery?
Dismantled parts were reassembled into the facade, giving the building rhythm, depth and continuity.
The structural grid defines the architecture. Precise cuts create openings for light, views and public life.
This, for us, is the core of transformation:
Understanding what already exists - and letting that drive the project forward.
Big congratulations to the winner @ega_erikgiudice_architects
And thank you to everyone on the Sunnerö Architects team for the work on our proposal.
With a color that carries.
With its expressive geometry and open ground floor, Selma dissolves barriers and reconnects the urban fabric - creating value not only for the site, but for the entire district.
The buildings are composed of two volumes of six and four stories, carefully relating to both the emerging city street and the existing neighborhood scale.
Large, glazed openings create transparency and safety, while six through-building entrances activate the street. Higher ceiling heights allow for future adaptability, ensuring that the building can evolve over time.
The detailing of the facade allows the color to remain cohesive while light and shadow animate the surface.

A school cafeteria became the town’s living room.
Sometimes the best spaces hide in the most unexpected buildings. Strandängsskolan’s 1960s cafeteria had everything except a chance to show it.
We gave it that chance. Now it’s a stage, a dining area, a meeting place - not just for the school, but for all of Båstad.

As the year draws to a close, we at Sunnerö Architects would like to take a moment to express our gratitude to our clients, collaborators, and community.
Thank you 🛷☃️🛷⭐️

LIFE IN BETWEEN – The Portugal Elderly Home is a social and communal living room with a grand view over the scenic Portuguese landscape. The shared space on the entrance floor attracts people living in the area and can host a variety of activities, meetings, and experiences accommodating the residents as well as the local community.

LIFE IN BETWEEN – The Portugal Elderly Home’s wooden construction is wrapped in a curtain of metal mesh. Softening the shape and blurring the outline of the building. The curtain gives flexibility to the need of privacy and the need to block the sun.
THREE IN ONE – In the middle of Oskarshamn stands an old tree. Around it, we have designed a new building composed of differentiated volumes with complementary proportions unified by a warm wood facade. Townhouse entrances create a more pedestrian friendly street while a mix of studios and larger apartments above allows for a diverse mix of living spaces. A sustainable hybrid structure of timber and concrete holds a raised common garden concealing the garage below.
