say hello to yarrow atelier 🌿 for a while, i felt like i was growing past the bounds of sunflower knit, my decade-old business that has housed so much of my work. as i’ve been stretching more into my roles as educator and fine craft artist, rather than just the roles of knitter/dyer, i felt as though the old name and brand didn’t fit anymore. they made me itchy, like an old skin trying to slough off. and then i realized, sunflower knit hasn’t grown too large. i just need a bigger container for the larger projects i’m working on and dreaming of next - bigger than a sweater lot of yarn or a collection of sock patterns, broader than a single book or shop update. those things can keep existing, i just need more space for the art, the learning and teaching, and the literal gardens of my dreams ✨ yarrow atelier is my home studio, the space i craft all of my pieces and dreams, and eventually, my goal is for it to expand to welcome you too. my work has stretched a lot over the years, but sustainability and passion have remained at its core. i’m looking forward to the next big expansion, a 5-10 year plan that will require a lot more growth both literally and metaphorically. it’s an idea that has been in my head since i was 18, a shared artist space open to the public where people can connect to stories, ritual, and the sparks of creativity that live within us all. it’s come into clearer vision over the past few years, and i feel almost ready to expand fully into it. it’s going to take a lot of money, because we live under capitalism, and also i think a good dose of magic and intuition. of trusting when i find the right land at the right time, of making that scary jump when i do. and of keeping the path towards it as clear as i can while i carve it out myself. i hope you stick around with me to see it through 🌱 swipe to learn more and to learn how you can help make this shared space a reality 🧺

a welcome and (re)introduction 👋 hi sweet peas. i’m ash, the artist and educator behind all the content you see here. i have a background in theatre and have been working in knitwear design and natural dyeing since 2014, full-time since 2018. at my core, i’m a storyteller and maker of worlds, although the ways that i do that might range from creating patterns for a book, an interactive installation, teaching a class, or collaborating with fellow artists, farmers, and makers to craft something completely unique. i’m devoted to providing people of all ages with the knowledge and resources they need to create their own interesting worlds, and i especially know my way around slow fashion, fibreshed advocacy and connections, and northern-specific natural dyeing practices and colour palettes 🌿 my work takes me from my home studio to school classrooms to trade shows to fun collaborations with corporate, non-profit, and private organizations. no day is the same, but passion and sustainability are always at the centre of whatever i’m doing. in my personal life, i’m a queer femme, fibre witch, hedgewitch, and parent to willow, the giant coven pooch/furry assistant. i love to travel and meet new people, and as i age i find myself preferring rural spaces over urban (although i’ll probably always stick close to the city). i live on treaty one territory in winnipeg, canada, and the north atlantic runs deep through my bones 🖤 wanna work with me? scroll through the slides, check the 🔗 in bio, or visit to see how we can make magic together ✨

Ẹ̀lú/indigo/indigofera spp. 💙 arguably the most famous natural dye, used for thousands of years around the world and often the specific species assumed to be referenced when people speak of "indigo" more generally, indigofera spp. (in particular, indigofera tinctoria) has a long and complicated history. tied up in slavery and imperialism, while also deeply embedded in important cultural practices across time and geography, we will be learning about Ẹ̀lú from our next @cosmos.conference lunch hour lectures guest speaker, yoruba indigo master @yoruba_indigo 🌿 tune in for gasali's talk on saturday and learn more about yoruba textile knowledges. tickets can be found at /tickets-2 🌼

our fifth @cosmos.conference lunch hour lecture, coming up on saturday at 2pm cdt/1pm mdt, is with gasali adeyemo from @yoruba_indigo 🌼 gasali is a yoruba indigo master and cultural educator whose work is rooted in lineage, discipline, and the living traditions of yoruba textile knowledge. raised within yoruba cultural practice and trained in traditional indigo and resist-dye techniques, gasali learned adire not simply as a craft, but as a language—one that carries history, symbolism, personal narrative, and communal memory. his work reflects a lifetime of devotion to understanding indigo as both material and meaning. working primarily with adire eleko, adire oniko, and hand-drawn batik techniques using natural indigo pigment, gasali creates textiles that function as cultural texts. each piece is informed by process, story, and the philosophical foundations of yoruba material culture. for decades, gasali has shared this knowledge through teaching, workshops, and cultural programs across the united states and internationally. his approach to teaching emphasizes transmission over replication—inviting students and audiences to understand the deeper cultural intelligence embedded in indigo, pattern, and process. gasali’s work has been presented through cultural institutions, international markets, and educational programs, and continues to evolve through carefully selected exhibitions, residencies, and collaborations. while his practice remains grounded in tradition, it is equally committed to relevance, dialogue, and continuity. today, gasali adeyemo balances teaching, cultural exchange, and studio practice, offering limited institutional programs each year while continuing to welcome students through workshops hosted by respected organizations. you can get your ticket for gasali's talk alone or for the full series at /tickets-2 🎟️

japanese indigo/chinese indigo/dyer's knotweed/liao-ian/ai/jjok/polygonum tinctorium/persicaria spp. 💙 persicaria tinctoria and its related species are sources of indigo native to asia, including modern-day china, japan, and korea. while its indigotin blues are most famous, you can also extract greens and purples using different methods to apply other dye chemical constituents to textiles. local traditions vary, including fresh leaf, dried leaf, and pigment applications, but persicaria is not only a source of dye - it is a source of medicine as well! if you want to learn more about that, you can check out our @cosmos.conference panel with @kindigo_studio , @naettla , and @indigoshademap from last year’s archive. this time, we’re being joined by rosi olivan from @itequiya.lab as she shares her experiences using homegrown persicaria tinctoria and urine as a sustainable textile and gardening method 🌿 tune in for rosi’s talk on sunday and learn more about her background in chemical engineering and how it has translated to her natural dyeing practice. tickets can be found at /tickets-2 🌼
