Let’s talk about the merging of dancefloors and bedrooms. With Not For Your Ears, Sun Genam explores the thin line between dancefloor and dreamworld, the intimacy of bedroom productions and the pulsating energy of the club, without compromise. It’s music that both whispers and drives, made to explore with headphones on and also born for movement. A world is created where intelligence and instinct meet, a place where beats and silence come together to tell a hypnotic story. This isn’t music to just hear – this is music to feel. For this mix, Sun Genam took a different approach than usual and recorded a mix using only his own productions. “I’ve included upcoming releases, but also unfinished older material that will probably never see the light of day.” Some of the tracks featured in the mix are collaborations with friends: N0dance, Grosheid and Dean High. @sun.genam : “When it comes to music, I tend to stay away from conceptual thinking or research, which is something I use a lot in my visual work. I want music to feel pure and direct. It has to be built on intuition rather than thought. I might take a concept as a starting point for a track, but I never sit down and decide beforehand what kind of music I want to make or what it should communicate. It’s 100% personal. I do have certain standards for myself when it comes to what makes a track good: it should feel alive — breathing, growing, flowing — even if it’s super minimal. It should have depth: foreground, background, texture, left/right movement, echoes, and so on. For club tracks, a track should offer something for the body, the mind and the soul. Purely somatic music can be fun, but it’s often too boring for me to produce.” In his words, the mix becomes “a train ride through surreal landscapes where the organic, the technological and the metaphysical melt into each other.” More releases are on the horizon: an album is set to land on Optic Portal, the label run by Spekki Webu.
