Ocean people - a few months ago I met Arai-san on the beach south of home.
He told me he was 82… or maybe 84 — he laughed when he said it. I photographed him in the water and on land, and posted a few images of him then. I’m heading back to that location today, I wanted to find one frame that felt like him to do as a portrait shot.
He doesn’t dive the same spots all year. He rotates his locations to protect the ocean, so when he returns there is still life to gather.
Each morning he rides his bicycle to the sea, free dives all day for octopus and shellfish, then cycles to the port to sell his catch.
He’s done this his entire life.
He doesn’t remember when he started.
Still diving.
Still working.
Still in love with the sea.
An absolute inspiration.
What are you going to be doing at 82.

Really happy to get my Miyazaki images featured across 10 pages in issue: 605 of the bible of surf mags @tracksmag . It’s great to see some of the surfers here in Miyazaki getting some views on them from outside of Japan 🇯🇵

Around 12 months ago I shot this amazing young ladies wedding at @notahotel_official Aoshima , this time it was a maternity shoot at the same location 🏝️ 🍾, next year it’ll be family photos. 👼🐣🍼 🏝️
I used my XT2 because of the recent camera drowning which I’m still upset about and for this shot the Fujifilm #xf50f1 . I love the detail you can see in dress with this lens , just incredible.

Miyazaki is a small vibrant city on Japan’s southeastern coast that is chilled, scenic and surf-focused.
West Australian photographer Adam Serra is hooked on shooting its waves and culture.
In Issue 605 we asked Adam to take a deep dive into the eclectic surf town with deep roots in the fishing industry.

The camera failed on the day, but I still managed to get a few shots out of the old girl before she gave up.
I picked up the Fujica 35 EE in a junk shop for about $10 , not expecting it to work—but once I got it home and gave it a proper look over, everything seemed okay. The lens was super clean, and being a 1.9 Fuji, I assume it had to be quality.
I tested it about 100 times before loading film—everything seemed perfect. Then on the day of the elopement … 12 frames in, and it jammed.
Honestly though, I love what it produced, so I’m going to send her off for repairs in Fukuoka and if it can be ret I’ll add the little Fuji to the kit.

Yesterday in Okinawa for an elopement —started with a beautiful sunny morning, and the moment the cameras came out, the rain rolled in.
Between the clouds, the rain, hiding in caves , umbrellas, broken camera , wrapping the AD400 strobe in plastic trying to keep the rain off it and everything in between, Okinawa still showed off how insanely beautiful it is.
