Been living in the moment this week without paying much mind to social media. Our #nokings rally is about to start here in #durhamnc, and I’ve spent the week with @sumnerphi and @davidwimbish , arranging and recording songs that narrate our collective experience over the past decade or two in American life.
I think it’s important to show up today and every day, working hard with people you love and trust, to contribute something to our common good. These friends, my family and others have held me up through these hard, hard years, where America has been losing grasp on its beautiful freedom as so many act and speak and vote out of fear of whom they don’t understand.
I’ve been shaped by that old parable of the Good Samaritan, with its simple message: your enemy is still your neighbor, and you’re responsible for his well-being. There is no good society, no good nation, no good community without the effort to make sure everyone can thrive. We’re gonna keep making art and striving to tell the truth. America has known Greatness and also Great Failure, just like every other human endeavor. Let’s keep chasing that more perfect union. Thanks for everyone who’s showing up this weekend.
Where are the philosopher kings? Where are the benevolent leaders? Money craves power. Power craves money. We are bystanders to the hunt, bycatch in the predators’ jaws. Only standing together, fighting together, do we survive.
