On this day, the heavy metal world lost one of its most iconic voices. On May 16, 2010, Ronnie James Dio passed away, leaving behind one of the most influential legacies in the history of rock and metal 🌈 Born Ronald James Padavona in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Dio began his musical journey in the 1960s, but it was during the 1970s that his name became legendary through his work with Rainbow, alongside former Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. Songs like “Stargazer”, “Man on the Silver Mountain” and “Long Live Rock ’n’ Roll” helped shape the epic and melodic sound of heavy metal. In 1979, Dio faced one of the biggest challenges imaginable: replacing Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath. Instead of simply continuing the band’s legacy, he helped redefine it through albums such as Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules and Dehumanizer, records that remain essential in metal history. Later, with his own band Dio, he delivered classics like Holy Diver, The Last in Line and Dream Evil, while also becoming forever associated with the “devil horns” hand gesture that became a universal symbol of metal culture. In 2009, Dio publicly revealed he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer. Despite undergoing treatment and remaining optimistic, he passed away on May 16, 2010, at the age of 67. More than a decade later, Ronnie James Dio’s voice and influence continue to resonate across the metal world, reminding everyone why he remains one of the genre’s most respected and beloved figures. #RonnieJamesDio #HeavyMetal #BlackSabbath #Rainbow #DioBand

One of the most emotional moments at Welcome To Rockville this year involved Jessyca, a single mother currently battling Stage 4 breast cancer. As part of a Dream Day organized by the LTD Foundation, Jessyca got the chance to spend time backstage with Lamb Of God vocalist Randy Blythe. After learning that Jessyca and her son Kody shaved their heads together when her chemotherapy treatment began, Randy offered to let her shave his head as an act of solidarity. 🖤 “Thank you Randy… for seeing me.” #LambOfGod #RandyBlythe #WelcomeToRockville #FuckCancer #MetalCommunity

#OnThisDay May 15, 2001. Lateralus by Tool 🌀 Recorded at CCE Studios, The Hook and Big Empty Space (California) and produced by David Bottrill with the band, this was Tool’s third studio album and one of the most discussed progressive metal releases of the early 2000s. The record pushed further into long-form structures and shifting rhythms first explored on Ænima. Tracks like “Schism”, “Parabola” and the title track combine complex time signatures, atmospheric layering and mathematical references. “Schism” won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2002 and helped the album debut at #1 on the Billboard 200. Alex Grey’s artwork and the Fibonacci sequence embedded into “Lateralus” became defining elements of the album’s identity. #Tool #Lateralus #ProgressiveMetal #Metal2000s #NowPlaying

#OnThisDay May 15, 1995. Orchid by Opeth 🌺 Recorded at Unisound Studio (Sweden) and produced by Dan Swanö with the band, this was Opeth’s debut album and one of the earliest examples of progressive structures merged with death metal. The record moves between acoustic passages, long-form arrangements and extreme sections uncommon for mid-’90s Scandinavian metal. Tracks like “In Mist She Was Standing” and “The Twilight Is My Robe” already hinted at Mikael Åkerfeldt’s atmospheric approach to songwriting. While its initial reach outside Europe was limited, “Orchid” gradually earned recognition for how differently it approached the Swedish death metal formula. #Opeth #Orchid #ProgressiveDeathMetal #90sMetal #NowPlaying
