Ive spent my entire life being told that I do not fit in
the industry and they tell me this is the asian they want.
Being a woman / non binary person of colour in this industry can be so excruciatingly frustrating to the point where you think, what is the fucking point? Racism / sexism / classism in this industry is so abhorrent, people treating you so blatantly differently because you don’t fit into their white pretty thin ideal. On the flip side, promoters decisively booking you because you’re ‘exotic’ enough for their mayonnaise toxic line up.
The unconscious bias is real.
I get asked why I gig so much. The simple reason is that I know that I have to work harder than other white comics. POC comics , specifically WOC comics will reach milestones much later than their white counterparts, fact. Period. Does it need to change? Of course. Will it be any time soon? Probably not. We as people of colour have always had to prove that we are funnier and that we have to ‘stand out’ more and not be compared to other non white comedians (even though you love to get us confused) They pit us against each other so much so we believe we need to be better than another when in fact we need to lift each other up. My other Asian femme / non binary comics, we are all so different and everyone of us have a different story to tell.
I have a really special place in my heart for other women / trans / non binary creatives of colour because we out here doing it yall and I really really love you and appreciate you being here.
