We talked to curator Marjorier Ding (@marjorier_ding ) and artist Sin U Lam (@sulaaam ) about how they met through Parrot’s Monthly Open Call—and how that first conversation turned into a full exhibition.
“Soft Burn” opens 13 June at TIDERIP (@tiderip_ ), London.
This is why we do what we do: to make space for real connections between artists and curators.

My first solo show “Estr. Do Istmo” is on view at @modernanimals__ in Zurich till April 12th. 💛
This show, named after the street of the Cotai Strip (金光大道), traces Macau’s shift from a colonial past to modern prosperity, reflecting on the tensions and continuities between heritage, rapid urban development, and the convergence of cultures that define its contemporary identity.
Thankyou to everyone that made this possible, specially @suki.rar@finn_canonica@cansu_s.e
We are pleased to present London-based painter Sin U Lam’s first exhibition with us.

Sin U Lam is an artist from Macau working in London. Macau was Portuguese territory for over 400 years – a duration that leaves deep, soulful marks. Her intense relationship with colour might be described as the “Portuguese“ quality in her work; colour as emotional expression, in the way one encounters it in Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso or Nadir Afonso. And yet there is also that melancholy Pessoa described so lastingly – the longing for something intangible, that one perhaps never possessed and never will.
As a painter, she seems to know that richness lies within. She paints it in its full splendor and structural complexity. Her brushwork carries a delicate sense of touch; foreground and background flow into one another, layers shift, space emerges not as backdrop but as something active and inhabitable. Colour is deployed architecturally – it builds tension, marks transitions, determines the rhythm.

Sin U Lam at Modern Animals Space as something active. Color used architecturally. Stepping nearer, you fall into her paintings held by deliberate structure. Sin U Lam’s works claim attention. They invite the viewer to linger in controlled, inhabitable spaces.
Born in Macau, based in London. Sin U Lam graduated with First Honours from Chelsea College of Arts in 2024.

“One who drinks from Lilau never forgets Macao.”
This piece, Largo do Lilau, is a personal reflection on memory, heritage, and the quiet poetry found in place. I was drawn to how this square holds traces of both Portuguese and Chinese worlds — the pastel tones, the Mediterranean curves, and the whisper of Art Deco meeting tradition.
