SUBCITIZEN (Tony Grainger) has long been stirring experimental airwaves in Birmingham, UK. After selling off the studio gear he’d built up in his teenage years, he moved to the city to study sound engineering and soon found himself working at Tempest Records in the late ’90s.
Already deep into a vinyl obsession—having made the switch from CDs in the mid ’90s—he took charge of techno, electro and electronica buying. This led to him being headhunted by Integrale Muzique, the influential international vinyl distribution company founded by Regis, central to shaping the Birmingham techno sound.
From there, Tony was immersed in the global exchange of records, trading across the UK and beyond.
As a promoter and DJ, his sound has always been fluid, but rooted in glitch, precision edits and loop-driven experimentation—whether pushing heavy dancefloors or exploring more abstract, atmospheric spaces.
Across bookings and selections alike, the aim has remained consistent: presenting forward-thinking, genre-spliced experimentation at the cutting edge.
For over 15 years, Tony has curated and run DJ events at the legendary Hare & Hounds, stage managing international and local talent. He continues to buy, sell and trade records—sitting on a formidable archive of vinyl—while regularly sharing selections through online and seller gatherings
