Carrier is the debut release by
@__straye , alias Kevin Ruiz, a producer and DJ based
in sunny Los Angeles, California. It’s a trance-inducing trip through high-octane techno and half-time bass music, set off with rhizomatic drums and a darkly
gleaming coat of prismatic sound design.
It sounds like the future, but it’s built for right now—where lines between are dissolving steadily, where hybridization is the crucial marker of potency.
Straye goes full-time half-time right from the go—
“Ritual” is the record’s headiest track, a swirling trek through deepest space. “Close Encounters” keeps the pace, clocking down into fractalized bass-wobble banger territory. “Shapeshift” picks up the tempo for a rollicking techno scorcher complete with clattering hand drums. Afterward, “Carrier” opens the throttle to the max: a rubbery, arpeggiated bassline pulses insistently while interlocking percussion propels forward at 170 beats per minute. To close,
@djkms1999 hones in on the hand drums of “Shapeshift” for their
aptly titled “Tribal Tool” remix—this one’s got warm deep house flair.
