In October 2019, protests against a transit fare hike in Santiago erupted into a nation-wide insurrection against the Chilean state. For six months, the streets were transformed into vibrant laboratories of self-organization, creativity and resistance, before ultimately being cleared by the promise of a new constitution and the spread of a global pandemic.
In the opening installment of Interrebellium, subMedia traces the history of the Estallido Social through the first-hand experiences of its participants, as they share battle-tested street tactics, and hard-won lessons about the lengths that the state will go to repress and recuperate challenges to its rule.

The Greek state is planning the eviction of “Oi Prosfygika” in Athens, one of the largest self-organized housing communities in Europe. This space represents collective living, social projects, and resistance against displacement.

I contesti in cui viviamo continueranno a deteriorarsi in futuro, ma la scommessa è che al cuore stesso dei «collassi» si produrranno rotture e grandi cambiamenti che, se avremo un piano, potremo volgere a nostro vantaggio. Ogni nostro passo, ogni ostacolo che superiamo ci avvicina un po’ di più a vittorie concrete, vittorie che possano offrire consolazione alle anime di coloro che abbiamo perduto nel corso della lotta e che aspettano di poter riposare in pace.
Siamo consapevoli della portata di questo compito, stiamo imparando dalle sconfitte dei nostri predecessori, e siamo consapevoli della molteplicità delle minacce che incombono sulle nostre teste. I pronostici non ci sono di certo favorevoli ed è possibile che non riusciremo a far soffiare il vento dalla nostra parte, a essere quello tsunami che rovescia tutto. Ma è un rischio che siamo pronti a correre perché, come diceva un’amica catalana: «Ci sono momenti in cui il vero rischio è non rischiare».
