Cherished memories from our presentation at this year's @xarkis__ festival. Our project, By Word of Mouth, emerged from deep research and heartfelt conversations with artisans and shopkeepers in old Nicosia. Through their stories, we explored how their daily lives have grown increasingly solitary. We aimed to amplify their voices—those who often feel forgotten and overlooked—and to document their presence in the city's history. This journey would not have been possible without the incredible opportunity to participate in the Xarkis Multi-Residency. We are deeply grateful for the inspiring individuals we encountered along the way. Sustainable fabric sourcing is a very important part of my work. One of the interviews we conducted for mine and @nais_marcon 's short film "By Word of Mouth/ Από Στόμα σε Στόμα" was that of Mr Neofitos Mr Neofitos opened his own fabric shop in 1976 after 15 years of working in other fabric shops. His knowledge about fabrics is truly incredible, and the stories he told us even more so. It has been over 10 years since he has made a new stock order. Being around 70 years old now, he wants to sell what he can and retire within the next two years. His fabrics will become deadstock as there is no one interested in taking over his business. [ENG] Very happy to share with you this short trailer of our film co-directed with @sty_stella “By Word of Mouth/ Από Στόμα σε Στόμα during an artistic residency in Cyprus for the @xarkis__ . Set around the city of Nicosia, this film traces our encounters with the older generation of Cypriots, exploring their relationship with their city and the upheavals they've been through in recent decades. Through their testimonies, the film poetically traverses the profound transformations of Cypriot society and how these events have shaped their lives and their view of their country. Some images captured by @anais.roubertou during the filming of me and @nais_marcon 's experimental film "By Word of Mouth/ Από Στόμα σε Στόμα" presented at @xarkis__ festival For our project, we interviewed some of the few remaining shop owners in the old town of Nicosia, a fragmented city. These shop owners and artisans, whose professions are dissappearing in Nicosia, feel forgotten by society. We therefore wanted to give them a platform to tell their stories. This costume was my way of designing a continuation to their stories. All the fabrics were bought from Mr. Neofitos, a man with a forgotten fabric shop within the walled city, each fabric holding a special story. I wanted to create something that mirrors the sadness, exhation but also the hope and beauty of the stories we heard. A big thank you to the magnificent @rixac for her beautiful movements in our film! It was such a huge pleasure working with you! Stella Stylianou (CY) is a Paris-based designer who specialises in dance costumes, sustainable textiles and fashion films. Their collaborative documentary-fiction will merge local stories and art through a unique costume creation, diving into Nicosia's history and community connections. * (GR) H Naïs Marcon (Γαλλία) είναι Γαλλίδα βιντεο-καλλιτέχνιδα και εξερευνά τις αναδυόμενες τεχνολογίες με τη βοήθεια διαφόρων μέσων.
