Public space is always also social space — a framework for encounter, exchange and collective coexistence. This discussion addresses the relationship between spatial structure and social appropriation, asking how public spaces can support openness, participation and resilient forms of neighbourhood life within increasingly diverse urban environments.
As part of the Schwerpunktgespräche öffentlicher Raum series, @opensquare.ch uare.ch and @architekturforum_zuerich rum_zuerich invite to an evening of talks and discussion with Tinu Bautler @werkbund.ch (SWB / Soziale Plastik) and Barbara Emmenegger (Soziologie & Raum), moderated by Karin Salm. The discussion will be held in German.

Still not fully built, but each year a new piece is added to Paradiso Lungolago.
Step by step, the waterfront connection is taking shape - reconnecting a place where, for a long time, the edge to the water was fragmented and almost invisible. Now, it’s slowly becoming a continuous, accessible landscape.

Oerliker Park - the first of four parks in Zurich North - was conceived as an open experiment: a public space for an unknown future.
Built on a former contaminated site and without fixed programs, it was designed to grow with its surroundings. Around 1,000 trees planted in a grid shape a space that continues to evolve over time - a park that reinvents itself alongside the neighbourhood.

A special place deserves special furniture.
For a site rich in history, every detail matters. These concrete picnic tables and chairs have become part of the identity of this iconic space - rooted in Swiss history, but also meaningful to us.
As one of our early projects, they helped shape our approach: designing landscapes with a sense of humour, atmosphere, and a strong identity.

We keep coming back to our built projects — observing how they evolve over time and become part of the everyday life of their neighbourhoods.
In these images: one of our early works, Fabrik am Wasser, set along the Limmat in Zurich — now growing into an open, lived-in space shaped by the people who use it.

Office in focus, Studio Vulkan Landschaftsarchitektur, with offices in Switzerland and Germany:
"The work of Studio Vulkan is emblematic of networked thinking. In multifaceted projects, the studio takes the lead at all scales in giving shape to the imagery in the design and moderating the team’s specific requirements. In a broad, interdisciplinary discourse, the context-oriented design language is thus created to answer the pressing questions of our time with creative and strategic approaches in concrete project implementation."
