More than just a way up. | Vasaka Journal 01.
In our studio, we always challenge the basic function of an element. A staircase shouldn’t just exist to bridge two floors; it should contribute to the soul of the room. We constantly ask ourselves: How does it sit in a space? What is the visual volume it occupies? What impact does it have on the energy around it?
For this project, we wanted to strip away the expected visual bulk. Notice the transition: we started with deep, grounding wooden base platforms. Rather than stopping abruptly, these elements seamlessly extend into a low seating spine for the living area, making the staircase an interactive part of the room rather than just a corridor.
As you step up, the structure dramatically changes to achieve a feeling of absolute weightlessness. While you see an impossibly thin 10mm folded metal plate carrying micro-concrete treads, what you don’t see is the elaborate structural detailing concealed within the wall behind it. It takes a tremendous amount of hidden engineering and heavy framework to create the illusion of something so effortless and slender.
We paired this with a minimal steel framework for the railing. Because the metal frame is so visually quiet, the warm wood top rail appears to just float alongside you.
It’s light in appearance, yet grounded in warmth. We don’t want to just build things because they are supposed to be there; we want them to make you feel something.
Lightness. Warmth. Pause.
Beads that found their way out of the jewellery box.
When we came to designing this partition, we imagined shallow shelves threaded with a composition of beads, turning something purely functional into something sculptural.

The dining.
Custom table flowing out of the kitchen counter, curved edges, inbuilt sink, and lots of love in the details. This is the part that gives us the biggest kick.

The luxury of pause.
The interior does not dictate function, It suggests flow. The kitchen is an exercise in disappearance, with oak shutters and curved ceilings dissolving the machinery of utility.
A linear cut slices through this ceiling connecting the two levels. Rising through this double height void is a sculptural totem by @harshitajhamtanidesigns - restrained, vertical and jewel like, drawing the spirit upwards.

This is the living room, but we didn’t design it to behave like one.
It’s shaped more by movement than function. A space you pass through, pause in, and return to differently each time.
Limestone terrazzo floors melt into microcement walls, wrapping everything in one continuous, monochromatic skin.
When everything speaks the same language, the mind slows down, and the space begins to feel less like a room, more like a state.

Tried to make a staircase feel… not like a staircase.
Stripped it down to feel minimal, but simplicity like this is rarely simple structurally.
A thin, almost floating profile, a railing that barely holds on, a step that pauses to become a seat, softened with a planter.
These are the details we love getting lost in.

In a world defined by unrelenting velocity, architecture often races to keep up. This project, however,
was born from a desire to stop.

Before the house reveals itself, everything slows.
A path through green.
An open patio.
Concrete dissolving into reflection.
The architecture pauses.

Kalrav by Studio Vasaka
Kalrav, meaning “the chirping of birds” is more than a home; it is a revival of cherished memories. For the couple who reside here, it echoes a time of government quarters with deep verandahs, mango trees offering generous shade, and mornings awakened by birdsong. With their sons working away and visiting often, the design thoughtfully balances quiet daily living with the joy of family reunions. Though located on a compact urban plot in Mohali, the architecture gently reintroduces a sense of closeness to nature, turning everyday moments into meaningful rituals.
The entrance unfolds not in grandeur, but in openness to the sky. At the heart of the home lies a breathing courtyard, alive with shifting light and the soft rustle of leaves an organic alternative to ornate chandeliers or framed décor. The granite-clad verandah becomes a quiet stage for monsoon showers, drifting clouds, and leisurely cups of tea, celebrating simplicity and sensory experience.
