Atelier Kerkwerve / Fixed furniture The interior features a combined wardrobe, kitchen unit and bookshelf as fixed pieces of furniture. The Powerplex bio multiplex is used in combination with an epoxy top surface. The epoxy coating is derived from boatbuilding tradition. A secondhand sink, tap and lamps complete the ensemble. Atelier Kerkwerve / Facade - details In search of a proper facade material we encountered a batch of written-off mooring poles at the lumberstore @houthandelvanhamerenteraar . These old mooring poles, made from Basralocus hardwood, are cut to size and ready to be used as facade cladding. We tested the dimensions and details in a mock-up. All of the additional framing around window and door frames, including the exterior windowsills, are made out of the same timber. This approach is derives from the brick detailing used at the main house on the plot. Photos by: @joppeboots Timber supplied by: @houthandelvanhamerenteraar

Atelier Kerkwerve / Window frames The design of the atelier proposed certain window and door frames. However, finding a matching supply of secondhand window frames was a real challenge. At the shop of @edvanduinkozijnen the collection of secondhand window frames is huge, making it the perfect supplier. We managed to find a set of five identical windows that we arranged as a series of four and a single door. Moreover, we found a sliding door made out of exposed Iroko wood. All of the window and door frames have been given a new layer of paint, except for the sliding door. We left it in its original state. Atelier Kerkwerve / Interior cladding We cladded the walls in a rigid grid that continues seamlessly across the ceiling. Only the lintels, made from secondhand timber, remain exposed. All windowsills and other window surrounds are crafted from the same bio-plywood to ensure aesthetic consistency. Powerplex Bio plywood was used for the interior cladding. These panels do not contain toxic glues (formaldehyde-free) and provide the ideal level of air permeability required for the breathing building principle. The surface is finished with a layer of natural hardwax oil by @osmonederland Photos by: @joppeboots Hardwax oil supplied by: @osmonederland

Atelier Kerkwerve / Breathing building A secondhand batch of Isovlas, a bio-based insulation material made from flax fibers, lead to the decision to give the building a breathing skin. This means that the structure manages its own climate, air quality, and humidity through passive, natural processes. Essentially, the building mimics a biological organism: it uses its skin to inhale fresh air and exhale stale air and heat. Atelier Kerkwerve / Timber frame Reclaimed timber is the material used for the structural framework of the walls and ceiling. We visited many second-hand material sellers throughout The Netherlands. Eventually we found @gebruiktebouwmaterialen who were able to cut down larger beams to the requested dimensions. With the neatly cut beams we were able to construct the framework with reclaimed materials, but with precision. Photos by: @joppeboots Timber supplied by: @gebruiktebouwmaterialen

Atelier Kerkwerve / Concrete work The concrete floor slab and small retaining wall form the solid base for the predominantly demountable building. A location like this is hard to reach by a heavy concrete loaded truck. With the help of 2 connected pump wagons were able to reach the floor’s formwork. The retaining wall was no job for another concrete wagon. We constructed the wall by mixing bags on the spot. Photos by: @joppeboots Concrete work by: Studio tepe and Otte betonwerk BV

Atelier Kerkwerve / Foundation The first step is making the foundation. Only a small truck with a crane could bring the necessary material and machinery to site. The small truck slowly moved all of its material over a few hundred meters of unpaved entrance road. Multiple small scars on the closest trees and eight concrete foundation poles later we were ready for the concrete floor slab. Thanks to Leon for the precise and cautious placement of the foundation poles. Photos by: @joppeboots Foundation by: Leon Castelein - Welwillend Rotterdam BV
