From light to light, by hand, over and over
Wind, tide, buildings, blocks, flowers, doors
New and old, rise and fall
Then light pours in
You ask me how I feel, over and over
A light gathering. At this year’s
@alcova.milano , three design studios
@studiososlow @en_envy @chenfurong bring together their experiences around light into one historical room of Milan’s Baggio Military Hospital site. Living and working in different regions of China, each designer shapes light in a way inspired by their quotidian, backdropped by an ever-shifting urban landscape.
In the Kite series, Shanghai-based studiososlow explores the potential of handcraft, giving the traditional kite culture of the eastern coastline a modern twist, bringing the interplay of bamboo, paper, wind and sunshine into the domestic environment.
envy envy’s Bu Jiaxin lives and works in Xiamen, a cultural hub in the far south. Influenced by vernacular street decor through years of weathering, his Beat series morphs urban transformation into ornamental elements. Made by hand with homemade tools, each work is a gesture, a performance, a dialogue.
CHEN FURONG’s Harper series emerged from the designer’s intimate surroundings. With family drawings as the root, painterly expression blossoms into an assemblage of natural shapes and modular technicalities. The system’s tactile articulations guide users to participate in a play of form and illumination.
From studiososlow’s slowcore glow, to envy envy’s dynamic amorphism, to CHEN FURONG’s muted bloom, this migration of light breathes a time, a day. An invitation to see, to touch, to feel — and to get lost in translation, over and over.
