Gold leaf on glass for Huber’s Cafe, Portland’s oldest restaurant. Established in 1879 as the Bureau Saloon by W.L. Lightner who hired Frank Huber as the bartender. By 1887, Huber was a partner and within a year the sole proprietor.
Louie Wei Fung, known as Jim Louie, had immigrated to Portland in 1881 from Guangdong, China, at age eleven. Huber hired him in 1891 as the chef. The partnership proved profitable, as Huber plied drinks with staid ceremony while Louie served what became his signature roast turkey. They kept the restaurant open during the 1894 flood, when, the Oregonian later reported, Louie “sat in a rowboat at the back of the lunch counter…and dished out steamed clams and turkey sandwiches to patrons in boats.”
The Bureau Saloon was renamed Huber’s in 1895. Eventually the Huber family sold the business to the Louie Family and the restaurant has remained entirely in the Louie family ever since.
Nick Lee @studiosignco knocked it out of the park hand painting our official picnic table at Walker Stadium. @picklesbaseball getting ready for another season and we can't wait to cheer them on!
Studio Signs circa 1977. Founder Dean Stanley and apprentice Pam Jones painting giant letters on an old blimp hangar that had been repurposed into a lumber storage facility near the Oregon coast.

As we prepare for the Year of the Fire Horse, I realized that I hadn't shared this restoration project for the @portlandchinatownmuseum completed back in the Year of the Dragon. Thank you to all of the volunteers and staff that made it come together!
