@camionera.e9 is a vital sanctuary for London’s FLINTA* community, responding to the loss of over 60 per cent of LGBTQ+ venues since 2006, especially lesbian spaces, with a new approach rooted in care and Mediterranean charm. Named after Spanish slang for butch lesbians, it began as a 40-person pop-up in 2024 and quickly became a phenomenon, now tucked away in Homerton. Co-owner Clodagh Farrelly calls it "a love letter to the lesbian community," and co-owner Clara Solis emphasizes its inspiration from Spanish café culture, offering more than just nightlife.
The bar fosters community through events like speed dating, reading nights, and life drawing, eschewing typical binaries of British socializing. With £100,000 crowdfunded in a week and an ethos of ad-hocism, La Camionera invites shared ownership and embraces a lived-in, evolving identity, as Daniel Pope of Studio Popelo notes: "it’s a space that’s deeply personal, that tarnishes and wears beautifully."
