Early Residents
The studio began as a warehouse for storing four old Land Rovers I rescued from the southern hills of Mexico City in the spring of 2021. Dug and pulled out of the dirt were a ‘57 Series 1 86”, a ‘58 Series 2 88”, a ‘63 Series 2 109”, and a jalopy camper with a pop top all made up of several different vehicles.
The vehicles all belonged to a family of independent Land Rover mechanics in Mexico City who between 1965 and 1995, during Land Rover’s absence from the country, kept the fleet going despite heavy parts importation restrictions.
In order to circumvent PRI protectionist measures, the family formed a not-for-profit, “Club Land Rover AC”, which allowed them to service their vintage vehicles and those of their clients. It still exists today as the only officially recognized completely independent Land Rover club in the world.
Primeros Residentes
El estudio comenzó como una bodega para almacenar cuatro viejos Land Rovers que rescaté de las colinas del sur de la Ciudad de México en la primavera de 2021. Entre la tierra desenterré y arrastré un Series 1 de 1957 (86”), un Series 2 de 1958 (88”), un Series 2 de 1963 (109”) y una camioneta camper destartalada con techo elevable hecha de varias partes de distintos vehículos.
Los vehículos pertenecían a una familia de mecánicos independientes de Land Rover en la Ciudad de México que, entre 1965 y 1995, durante la ausencia de la marca en el país, mantuvo la flota en funcionamiento a pesar de las fuertes restricciones de importación de refacciones.
Para eludir las medidas proteccionistas del PRI, la familia formó una asociación civil sin fines de lucro, “Club Land Rover A.C.”, que les permitió dar servicio a sus vehículos clásicos y a los de sus clientes. Hoy en día sigue existiendo como el único club Land Rover completamente independiente reconocido oficialmente en el mundo.
