Umeå. Spring semester 2026 We look forward to discussing the work of the students in the master studio Northern Grounds together with our guests Jack dalla Santa @jack_dalla_santa and James Hamilton @j.j.hamilton Focusing on the architectural idea of the big roof as an urban figure in-between, the studio is working with an existing building on Kungsgatan in Umeå that is currently at risk of demolition. Through design research and strategies of adaptive reuse, the studio is engaging with architecture as a circular rather than an extractive practice, with the sim to get a wider understanding and explore possible expressions of the material circumstances of the present. Taught by Ulrika Karlsson @ulrikakarls and Agnes Paljak @agnespaljak

Umeå från läroverkets tak, 1918, Västerbotten museum Umeå. Spring Semester 2026 This semester the studio will be working in Umeå, strategically situated by the Baltic sea in Sápmi, within Västerbotten County. Building on the region’s long history of wooden construction, the studio adopts a critical perspective on the contemporary use of wood, with particular attention to the geopolitics of the forest and resource extraction. The studio will focus on the architectural notion of roofing through the study of a specific building located on Kungsgatan in Umeå, that is currently at risk of demolition. Through design research and strategies of adaptive reuse, students will engage with architecture as a circular rather than an extractive practice.

We are looking forward to discuss the work of the students of the master studio Northern Grounds together with our guests Samuel Lundberg @lundberg_samuel and Daniel Norell @edanielnorell This semester the studio has explored the theme of Inside/Out through proposals for residential projects in Arjeplog/Árjepluovve in Sápmi. Drawing on research into the histories and the lived-in architecture of Arjeplog/Árjepluovve at the beginning of the semester, aspects of time and duration have come to play an important role. This has been evident in relation to seasonal changes of weather, climate and material conditions on the ground, as well as in relation to the reuse, displacement and movement of buildings and homes. Taught by Sogol Baghban @gosol , Ulrika Karlsson @ulrikakarls and Agnes Paljak @agnespaljak
