What happens when recycled aluminium meets natural dyes and a computer controlled anodizing rig? For @dutchdesignweek, designers at @studiolooploop wanted to show that sustainability can be playful, joyful and seductive. The result was two pieces: the Color Cannon and the Alice Stool, made from 100% recycled aluminium, and anodized using LoopLoop’s in-house developed Magic Color Machine.

For the DDW 25 @dutchdesignweek LoopLoop combined (for the very first time) @hydrobenelux 100R aluminium with our 100% plant-based dyes, resulting in a piece that’s as colourful as circular. The Alice Stool transforms sustainability into an experience of colour, tactility, and playful presence. It invites the viewer to imagine a future where circular design feels alive - not austere - and where material innovation becomes an expression of joy. The Alice Stool is on show at the Friends&Friends of Friends expo organised by the lovely @alissanienke @nul.zes G3 building at the NRE area. #design #plantbased #anodising #cmf #collectibles

Introducing @studiolooploop Studio LoopLoop is a research-driven studio based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Founded by Odin Visser and Charles Gateau, the studio focuses on developing sustainable materials and innovative production techniques. Within their workshop, they reimagine industrial manufacturing processes on a micro scale. All production techniques are developed in-house as part of an ongoing material and process research, and are directly used by the designers themselves to create each piece.Their exploration of aluminum led to the discovery of a method to permanently dye the metal using plants. The resulting works embody the intersection of art and industry, with delicate natural patterns and colors — both meticulously applied by hand — contrasting with the hard, technical materiality of aluminum.

We’re excited to share that this year, @designacademyeindhoven launches Studio Better Matter — a new interdisciplinary bachelor studio co-led by Vlasta Kubušová @vlasta_kubus (Crafting Plastics! Studio @crafting_plastics) and Charles Gateau and Odin Visser @odin.visser (Studio LoopLoop @studiolooploop).Rooted in a shared passion for sustainable design, the studio combines expertise in biobased materials, circular systems and material science. Its mission is to give students the tools and confidence to explore new material solutions, while also zooming out to understand the wider systems these materials exist in.Studio Better Matter encourages a hands-on, experimental approach — bridging lab, field and studio practice, and teaching how to collaborate across disciplines. The [ Aero Light ] Wall LampThis model merges raw material science with refined aesthetics. At its core: aluminium foam — a porous, open-celled structure formed by injecting gas into molten metal. This lightweight “metal sponge” naturally dissipates heat, allowing powerful LEDs to shine without compromise.Each shade is finished with a striking gradient anodisation, developed in collaboration with Studio LoopLoop. We’re thrilled to announce the launch of Better Matter Studio — a new bachelor’s studio at Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands.Led by Vlasta Kubušová, Charles Gateau and Odin Visser @studiolooploop, this interdisciplinary studio bridges the worlds of design and science, with a strong focus on biodesign, materials science, and regenerative systems development.Through a mix of hands-on experimentation and theoretical research, students will explore the creation of novel materials rooted in circular economy principles.
