We were delighted to re-visit this 1950s gem among the gumtrees recently to see the ongoing interior and exterior transformations taking place.
The new owners approached us wanting to make some alterations to better suit their lifestyle. Understanding the beauty of the existing architecture, they were also keen to rectify some newer renovations by the previous owners to achieve a design more in keeping with the dwelling’s 1950s origins.
Externally the existing deck was extended to meet the new landscaping by @hightidelandscapes with a long cantilevered bench seat that is deliberately interrupted to make way for a new tree that will grow to shade the outdoor lounging space.

On the main living level the hard-working dividing wall conceals up-lighting to highlight precious objects, a low level drinks and glassware cabinet with a flip-down door/benchtop, storage for electrical devices and a tall cupboard space. The joinery continues into the new kitchen providing various niches for the kitchen appliances. The 2-way open shelving allows the entry foyer to be spied from the kitchen area.

The new dividing wall brought to life by @semperjoinery spans the split-level interior from the entry hall to the main living space. A place for books, plants and artwork it acts as a screening device from the lower level.

The fading pale exterior façade was painted in a bold, deep ‘blue steel’ and a contrasting pop of colour was used to give the front door its prominence. The house now stands proudly within the incredible new native landscape by @hightidelandscapes

We have a new sign!
Now you know what’s behind the 1920s shop facade on the St Georges Road, No.11 tram line in Northcote.
We’ve gently hung the sign behind the 100 year old original facade using thick round leather thonging finished with sweet hand knotted Monkey’s fists.
Drop us a line and come in and see us sometime, we’re here when we are not out on site.

Banksia Square - Kitchen
The kitchen in our Somers Beach House project was entirely rebuilt, demolishing an existing wall that closed the space off from the main living zone and creating a large opening onto the first floor balcony as well as an opening to the staircase hallway behind it.
The double sliding doors to the balcony slide completely out of sight on an external track, dissolving the boundary between the kitchen and the balcony on those beautiful summer days.
The new design greatly increases the circulation options allowing large holiday gatherings to flow freely from space to space.
The storage capacity is maximised in the new island bench and full height timber joinery. The stone benchtop continues into the appliance niche and this joinery wall has concealed open shelves to its rear for cookbook storage, lending an uncluttered sensibility to the new space.
We chose the combination of timber, natural stone and 2 tones of green to complement the native gardens that surround the house.

Banksia Square - Sliding Walls
Our Somers Beach House project involved the opening up of existing rooms thereby creating spaces that flow into one another and allowing daylight to stream through to the darker areas of the house.
The addition of new oversized sliding panels let the inhabitant modify the spaces to suit their activities.
The main living space can be closed off from the bedrooms for acoustic separation.
A second sliding panel creates a new opening to the kitchen from the internal staircase.
