Time tower
Time Tower is a performative architecture that alters the perception of time through light, air, movement, and sound, aiming to bring viewers to the here-and now. Positioned between two other clock-towers, it is a clock-tower with a sundial. Citizens walk the “Land of Hoboken” with a storyteller, stopping to collectively blow time and location-specific balloons to be hung on the tower’s façade as time-space capsules. It was initially designed for a competition invited by @omirotterdam and @airrotterdam for the 2024 Rotterdam Architecture Month, calling for a temporary watchtower and exhibition space in the garden of House Sonnenveld in Rotterdam.
While the design of House Sonnenveld, uses sunlight and its healing qualities against the post-war diseases, the design of the Time Tower integrates its psychological healing qualities much needed now.
The Open Call Crossing Borders aims to rethink borders: the human-invented boundaries that can be experienced in many different ways: administratively, scenically, ecologically, and practically 🌍
Borders define through both inclusion and exclusion, yet become less distinct when we view surrounding areas as a whole. In these transitional zones, life happens - work, nature, infrastructure - with challenges and opportunities that extend beyond artificial boundaries. What if we approached these urgent challenges together, transcending borders? What role would administrative boundaries still play? 🤔
One of the 15 selected projects is TRUCK STOP BORDER PROJECT by @studioilinx and @iearchitecture . They are reimagining truck stops at the Dutch border as social meeting places with room for healthcare and welfare services, instead of just logistical points. Findings on how these places can stimulate the development of border areas will be included in a publication that looks at different levels of scale: from the large European network to the everyday life of the trucker.
All 15 selected projects challenge us to see how borders can be approached and transformed in different ways. Wanna know more? Check out De Nieuwe Ruimte for more results from the Spatial Design Action Programme.
