AMBIENT SAUNA ft Taqsim, Chaia, Kenjiro, Josh Dunn May 17, 6-10pm Islandview Sauna Club 1000 Beaufait St, Detroit Islandview Sauna Club invites you to Ambient Sauna, a night of saunas, cold plunge, ambient music, and hanging out around the fire pit. The night features two live electronic duos: Taqsim and Kenjiro & Chaia. Taqsim presents a set bridging Detroit and Beirut, using synthesisers and drum machines to evoke Arab folk melodies. Kenjiro & Chaia present Yiddish archival samples and deep drone meditations. Finally, closing the night is Josh Dunn, presenting his signature otherworldly sound for a deep listening DJ set. YIDDISH DEEP LISTENING: A night of Yiddish song, archival samples, and guided movement in Minneapolis RSVP at link in @milkyjammers bio Friday, May 15, DOORS 7:30pm, MUSIC 8pm Calvary Baptist Church @ 2607 Blaisdell Ave $10-30 at door via cash, Venmo or PayPal (NOTAFLOF) We’re excited to invite New York-based Kleztronica artist Chaia for an evening of somatic movement and Deep Listening, grounded in Yiddish samples and song, alongside Minneapolis artists Miri Villerius and Sarah Larsson. The evening will kickoff with a guided movement session by local klezmer, journalist and Deep Listening practitioner Miri Villerius. Miri’s Deep Listening instructors come from the lineage of Pauline Oliveros, IONE, and Heloise Gold and have included Leila Ramagopal Pertl, Brian Pertl, and Stephanie Loveless. Then, Chaia and Sarah Larsson will lead a listening session through time featuring archival samples of Yiddish folksongs and live vocals. The duo will create meditative arrangements of Yiddish folksong, blending old recordings of Yiddish singers, interviews, and environmental field recordings with their own renditions of the songs. Framing the physical space will be an art installation by Kohenet Riv Shapiro exploring water as a site of global communication and solidarities. UPDATE: SOLD OUT Echoes of the Archive is coming to NYC!! Join 4 DJs electronically reimagining traditional archival and diasporic music. Blending histories from Minsk to Seoul, these artists will present dreamy, dubbed-out textures, creating a space where old voices to speak in new forms. Chaia and Neonlichter will open with two hours of trance inducing archival snippets from Montreal and Eastern Europe, in Yiddish and beyond. BlkShine will present a deep listening exploration of jazz, r&b, and soul music reflecting the radical Black musical traditions of Detroit and beyond. Nema Hän will present an expansive curation of archival CDs from Korea, empowering the senses through sound and movement. Tickets are limited. Link in my bio.
