urbanism: a study of urban residue in surry hills.
the history of surry hills is long, it being one of the first developed areas in sydney. pre-industrialisation, it was an area for farming animals, later moving on to be known for being located close to central station. over those transition years from farming to industralisation, the suburb degenerated into an area of crime and secrets. one major catalyst of undercover crime was a legislation forcing pubs to close at 6pm to prevent drunks to roam around the neighbourhood. this made people start ‘sly grog shops’ in their own houses and start to hide from the police, leading to the need for reinforced doors and window bars for protection and privacy.
today, surry hills is heavily gentrified, filled with cafes, galleries and high property values, yet these bars still remain. their presence is no longer about necessity, but persistence; existing through habit, cost or as subtle markers of the suburb’s past. they become urban residue, showing how the city does not erase its history but accumulates it, leaving traces of past conditions embedded in the present streetscape.
