Public life depends on spaces that invite people to stay, not just move through. Music Lane demonstrates how landscape architecture can support both circulation and occupation within a dense urban corridor. Planting, seating, and spatial definition create areas that encourage use without prescribing it. These environments contribute to a more active and connected public realm, where everyday activity becomes the measure of success. #WLAM2026 @nationalasla

Pedestrian priority, hierarchy, and scale of walks, plazas and gathering spaces (or as we like to call them, “outdoor rooms”) shape how a campus functions effectively. When circulation is intuitive, spaces are legible, and comfort is considered from the start, people move and interact with less friction. At the ACC Rio Grande Campus, these decisions support how students and faculty navigate the day, between classes, in short breaks, and across changing conditions. These are deliberate choices that shape movement, improve access, and make the public realm better over time. #WLAM2026

In collaboration with Nelsen Partners, Congress Avenue Re-Vision began with asking how Austin’s most visible Main Street could better support the economic and social life of Downtown. Research, coordination, and long-term thinking shaped a study that reimagines Congress Avenue as a more pedestrian-focused public realm where landscape performs as infrastructure. Those ideas remain conceptual, but they help frame what comes next and challenge the status quo of car-dominated American cities. #WLAM2026 Image credit: dwg.

At St. John Encampment Commons, the design began with listening. Research into the site’s history and engagement with the surrounding community informed a landscape that supports gathering, reflection, and daily campus life. Tree canopy, planting, and open space were shaped by what was learned before construction began. Here, learning is embedded in the work itself. #WLAM2026

Rainey Street Trailhead: Nature-Based Infrastructure at the Urban Edge Rainey Street Trailhead is modest in scale, yet its impact lies in its clarity. Community priorities were translated into a legible ecological structure and an accessible public space. The project demonstrates how compact sites can support habitat, access, and recreation within growing urban districts. Article by dwg. At 910 Louisiana, the landscape is infrastructure. It is performative and innovative. This required extensive coordination between the entire design team, ownership, and contractor to resolve this complex on-structure environment. Attention to detail above and below the surface is not always visible on its own, but it shapes everything that follows. Photo courtesy of HOK and TMRW. #WLAM2026 @nationalasla

Fantastic time at the Austin Home & Design Awards. Was a privilege to be nominated for Design Excellence for Landscape Design and a blast partying with fellow nominees and friends.

Over the past sixteen years, I have become accustomed to saying “everything is subject to change,” and today is no different. Every day of running a world-class design studio comes with a healthy mix of curveballs and new opportunities. One of those is that our long-time managing principal and even longer-time friend, Eric Schultz, has decided that now is the time to spread his wings and step out to start his own practice. We’ve worked alongside each other for close to three decades, and he leaves a lasting impact on our award-winning work and the studio culture. I’m proud to see him take this step, and he embarks on this next chapter with my full support and a genuine wish for his success. Sad but true, the food collection is going with him. We are incredibly grateful for what Eric has brought to the studio over the years, and we wish him and his team well. Rest assured, the work at dwg. continues with renewed enthusiasm, a strong team of seasoned staff and several brilliant new hires, and real momentum across the studio in Austin and the UK as we look ahead. Onwards and upwards, Daniel

Today is Professional Landscape Architects Day. Landscape architects shape places that affect how people move, gather, and spend time outside. The work carries responsibility for public health, safety, and long-term performance. #WLAM2026 #PLADay

Many of Central TX’s most beautiful landscapes like Music Lane, or The Fareground at One Eleven, have one thing in common: Daniel Woodroffe and @studiodwg It was lovely to interview him today about all things Austin, and the history and future of his growing company. Best of all, he’s just a lot of fun. Thank you for everything, Daniel!
