The building permit for our mixed-use cooperative high-rise in Zürich-Schwamendingen has been granted, and construction will begin later this year. Rising 60 meters, the residential tower marks the northeastern corner of the larger Dreispitz development by housing cooperative ASIG and will become a prominent landmark at the tunnel entrance leading toward Zurich City. In contrast to the programmatic monotony typical of high-rises, the building brings together a diverse mix of public and private spaces. The lower floors house a guesthouse, co-working areas, and an event space. Distributed throughout the tower’s full height, double-story multi-purpose rooms offer generous, flexible spaces for the residents of the 80 apartments. Competition, 1st prize (2021). Hybrid under construction 2/2 Construction of our mixed-use building on Lysbüchelstrasse is well underway. As the first project to be realized within the masterplan we developed in 2021 for the former industrial site in Basel’s #voltanord neighborhood, the eight-story building is conceived as a concrete skeleton structure with a timber facade. This robust yet adaptable framework—echoing the site’s industrial heritage—ensures long-term flexibility, allowing the building to accommodate a diverse mix of apartments, offices, and commercial uses. Tscharnergut Bern, renovation of the elementary school. Competition 1st prize 🏆 The Tscharnergut complex in the western part of Bern - at the time of its completion in 1965 the largest residential project in Switzerland - is an important architectural monument from the period of the „Grand Ensembles“. The elementary school located in its east is now being carefully renovated in close consultation with the heritage authorities. The school resembles an open campus in which the relationship between the buildings, the outdoor space and the adjacent neighborhood is of particular importance. The consolidation of this „learning landscape“, which also requires careful handling of the existing buildings, forms the basic constant for our concept for the overall renovation of the complex. 🥇Cooperative high-rise Rankstrasse, Basel. Competition 1st prize The 88m high residential tower is conceived as a piece of public infrastructure that will provide flexible living spaces and act as a catalyst for the urban development in the eastern part of Basel. The building will contain 126 apartments, community areas, and a guesthouse as well as public spaces and co-working offices. By reducing concrete to the necessary minimum and using timber as a building material, a sustainable and low-cost construction method can be achieved. A slender steel frame, painted in bright yellow, forms a "terrace commune” that serves as an access gallery for the apartments, but also offers a generous, private outdoor area for the residents. The entire building is accessed via a central, spacious staircase, which invites people to meet and is part of a spatial sequence that connects the upper and lower levels of the Holliger development, in western Bern. Some of the apartments can also be connected to each other via so-called "secret doors" on the inside, enabling flexible and spontaneous interaction between the residents. We have chosen a construction method that is both ecologically sustainable and economically viable: The ceilings and columns are made of reinforced concrete, and a façade of prefabricated timber components is mounted on top of this structure. Our project aims to transfer the qualities of the row house into a concept for a dense, urban building type. The apartments are designed as double-storey townhouses and are stacked vertically over a total of four floors.
