[my nebenfach project from 2024]
an exploration of bali’s history of tourism and neo-colonisation. the booklet acts as a collection of relevant articles, texts, and explorations. visually, the project plays on the traditional elements and impressions from the island combined with aesthetic closely tied to touristic entities.
now with a few years inbetween this project, some questions i think about:
- What does it mean to decolonise design, beyond just combining the ‘traditional’ and ‘contemporary’? To what extent can we divert from ‘pakem’?
- How is culture performed and practiced especially as an Indonesian, a country with over 1,300 ethnic groups, and is also in itself a nation formed by colonialism? As a Javanese with a specific background, does that come with certain boundaries in cultural practice, or are we all ‘Indonesian’?
and many many more questions about archive, design, and visibility. Still no concrete answers here (there might not ever be) but it’s worth exploring :)

the zine includes scanned in trinkets and quotes from ngai’s ‘the cute, the zany, and the interesting’ and richard’s ‘fifteen theses on cute’. printed with purple and fluorescent orange.
