“An estimated 90% of insects that fly through the Pyrenean mountain pass are pollinators. As they migrate, they move pollen hundreds of kilometres, improving the genetic diversity of plants. Insects such as drone hoverflies decompose waste and recycle nutrients so they can be used again by plants and animals.”

“Due to climate breakdown, habitat loss (driven by industrial farming) and pesticide use, the number of insects flying around our world is in decline. A study from Germany found there had been a 97% decline in aphid-eating migratory hoverflies over the past 50 years.
For centuries, insects migrated around the planet largely unnoticed. Now, as scientists are finally starting to unravel the mysteries of these long migrations, the insects are vanishing in front of our eyes.”

Increasingly uneasy at the proliferation of flag-waving nationalism and the normalising of far right ideology, I keep coming back to this project from a couple of years ago, with work made in response to writing in @leftcultures by @whatsheswriting whose text reflects on cultural hauntology, memory, race and class through the lens of Shane Meadows’ film ’This is England’ - echoes of which land uncomfortably close in the present.

Oasis live ‘25 > live visuals and art direction for OASIS track ‘Talk Tonight’
Now that the dust has settled (a little) on the cultural phenomenon that was the Oasis tour, I’ve been revisiting the work I created for this alongside @im_your_boss_ and animator @n.a.jenkins - Lovely to see the early style frames (shown here) evolve into animated sequences and then to see how the massive scale and multiple venue screens abstract / deconstruct the visuals further across all these different places and spaces around the globe. Epic stuff. 🔥🔥
I was particularly pleased with how atmospheric and tactile it all became, with the 🔥 animation by @n.a.jenkins brilliantly bringing the abstract forms, colours and textures to life. This has a nice retro feel too - the plane / travel elements in particular feel like the title intro to a shadowy 60’s conspiracy thriller.. now that would be nice next gig…

Exciting to see this live at scale last friday - Cardiff buzzing in bucket hats for the tour opener.
Working with animator @n.a.jenkins and director @im_your_boss_ we created a world of distance, East Coast / West Coast travel, alternating time zones, disconnection, moving through day and night in cities that aren’t home, taking off, landing, arriving and leaving.
Also > 👊🔥 really great and important for the illustration world to see a roster of excellent graphic image-makers and collagists curated front and centre at one of the years biggest cultural happenings - with such bold impactful work being excellently enhanced and brought to life at scale by a crew of talented animators. Nice one @im_your_boss_ 🔥💪
