Happy Lunar New Year 🧧✨ I’ve always been a big believer in the saying: “You are what you see”. Growing up in the Western world I didn’t really see faces in pop culture, advertising or the beauty industry that looked like mine and back then they definitely weren’t seen as the aspiration of beauty. Like many other ethnic minorities, it fed into my insecurities and it wasn’t until my late twenties that I finally embraced the parts of me that made me different; particularly falling in love with the way my eyes kissed in the corners.
But today, I’m encouraged that my little nieces and nephews get to grow up in a world where Asians are finally starting to get the spotlight and recognition we deserve, in advertising campaigns, in Hollywood and within the beauty & fashion industries. When people feel seen and heard, it gives them the belief they can be, do and achieve anything they desire.
I always promised myself when I became an Art Director and I got the chance to cast my own shoots, I would make little me proud by centre staging Asian models at every turn and to celebrate all that is beautiful and different about us. It’s the main reason I champion having a diverse team, not only infront of the camera but behind the scenes too.
I hope I’ve made my younger self proud. 💛

From my initial sketches of the palette design, to collaborating with the incredible NPD team on making it happen, to briefing the photographer and the glam team on my vision for the shoot – It took a village and an incredibly talented team, but forever grateful seeing everything come to life 360° so beautifully.
