We founded Studio monströös in 2017 as a team of 6 women and 1 man and the studio has remained largely female-led ever since. Something that, apparently, is still relatively unusual in the German business landscape.
♀️ With #InternationalWomensDay coming up this Sunday, we took a moment to look at who actually starts companies in Germany.
Back in 2017, we decided to start a studio together because working as a team meant we could take on larger projects, negotiate from a stronger position, and be recognised as professionals rather than individual “hobby artists”.
📊 Looking at the numbers helps explain why companies like ours are still relatively rare: In Germany, only about one third of entrepreneurs are women.
Studies show that this has little to do with ability and much more with structural factors, such as the lack of visible role models, unequal access to networks and venture capital, and the still uneven distribution of care work. In fact, all-male founding teams receive around 91% of venture capital investment in Germany.
👩🏼💻 At the same time, research increasingly shows that companies with female leadership often perform remarkably well. Studies have found that female-founded or gender-diverse companies can generate higher returns on investment, place a stronger focus on sustainability, and often report higher employee satisfaction.
💪🏼 Which makes one thing clear: when more women start companies, the entire entrepreneurial ecosystem benefits.
