Mercado Urbano is a mixed-use lifestyle hub in the heart of Loresho, developed in collaboration with Object Subject Architecture. Conceived as a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional market hall, the project brings together food, retail, and social spaces into a cohesive, community-driven destination within Nairobi’s residential fabric.
At its core, the project is designed as a porous, biophilic environment where architecture and landscape merge. A flexible undercroft allows the ground plane to shift between parking and a seasonal marketplace, while a central volume—anchored by a feature stair—draws visitors into a layered sequence of dining and gathering spaces beneath a softly filtered canopy.
Grounded in localized sustainability, Mercado Urbano draws from global market typologies while responding to Nairobi’s evolving urban identity. Through material restraint, passive strategies, and adaptable spatial planning, it becomes an everyday urban oasis shaped by climate, craft, and community.
