Our tailored zinc roof at Brown Hart Gardens is almost complete ❤️🔥👌🏽
Well done to the roofing team, who have built this entire roof BY HAND… even though it looks like a spaceship, nothing has been prefabricated, these are the same techniques that have been used to make roofs since the 1700s!
Zinc came to prominence in Napoleonic Paris, as copper and lead were needed for the war effort, and it’s an incredibly versatile and fluid material to work with - it’s also got good sustainability credentials, due to the long lifespan and recyclability.
Shout out to
@okta_construction and
@archicladuk again for pulling the building and cladding together… it’s a tough job working with an existing building and retained structure, but we’re being sustainable in capturing carbon, avoiding waste and giving an existing and tired site a new lease on life. 🤩
We wanted this project to feel like it emerges from nature, and the geology of the platform - it’s organic, but also otherworldly… a pavilion in a garden, or an organism on a shoreline - it’s a place of imagination between territories.
Externally it’s simple: it’s all about softening edges, enhancing sight-lines, playing with light and reflection - blurring inside/outside, garden/building, ephemeral/permanent… we used only four materials: frameless glass, polished stainless steel, perforated PPC aluminium, and zinc for the roof
The bold reimagining of the garden by
@nigel.dunnett (we miss you),
@thelandscapeagency and
@landformuk will be on site end of this month, and is a wild, biodiverse environment, with amoeba-like wiggly planters activating the deck.
Watch out for lighting by
@dpalighting , on its way soon, and the interior by
@eprarchitects -
@thebeaumontldn will be opening ‘The Pearl’ at this location, adding to their already incredible offer, and making the site the gateway to the hotel. 🦪
DM us if you like what you see - we’d love to chat.
