Book review from Medium (2025):
The Rainfall Market by You Yeong-Gwang is a whimsical and emotionally rich novel that blends Korean folklore with contemporary themes of self-discovery and healing. Originally written in Korean and translated into English by Slin Jung, the story follows Serin, a high school student weighed down by personal tragediesāher fatherās death, her sisterās disappearance, and the struggles of poverty. After sending a heartfelt letter about her misfortunes, she receives a mysterious ticket to the Rainfall Market, a magical place that appears only during the rainy season. There, accompanied by Issha, a shape-shifting cat-spirit, Serin explores enchanted shops run by Dokkaebi (mythical Korean goblins), each offering glimpses into lives she could live. But she must choose a new life within a weekāor risk being trapped in the market forever.
