In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating the legacy of Barbara Jordan, a trailblazer whose voice helped shape American history.
Born in Houston, Barbara Jordan became the first Black woman elected to the Texas Senate in 1966 and later the first Black woman from the South elected to the United States House of Representatives.
In 1976, she made history again with a groundbreaking keynote address at the 1976 Democratic National Convention, becoming the first woman to deliver a keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention.
Beyond politics, Jordan dedicated her life to education and mentorship, teaching at the University of Texas at Austin and inspiring generations of students to lead with integrity and purpose.
Her legacy reminds us that our voices matter — and that courage, conviction, and community can change the course of history.
