Pit fired clay reliefs in a custom white oak frame.
The smokey atmospheric textures of these hand carved tiles were made by natural smoke and combustibles during a pit fire in Malibu, CA back in January. This primitive firing technique traps smoke and reduces the atmosphere allowing carbon, minerals, wood shavings and natural elements like seaweed, coffee, sodium and banana peels to color the pottery.
Formations is a self-published bi-annual magazine. The publication will focus on the vast landscape of the American desert, from California to Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Both a celebration of the fertile history of this region and the new culture of artists and visionaries calling the desert home, Formations will include photography, architecture, literature, art and design.
