At the Anthroposophy Indonesia International Conference, we were invited to guide a bamboo weaving session, a simple craft practice rooted in presence.
Each participant brought their own rhythm and expression.
The result: handwoven fans, each one unique, made with focus, color, and care.
But more than the outcome, it was the process that mattered.
Through weaving, we connected, to our bodies, to the bamboo, to each other, and to the wisdom that lives quietly in tradition. 🌿
Thank you @anthroposophy.indonesia for the space to share this moment.
Have you ever tried weaving or learning through your hands? We’d love to hear your experience.
Is all bamboo sustainable? Not always. And that’s the conversation we need to have.
Bamboo is often praised as eco-friendly. But what about how it’s grown, treated, and who’s behind it? Sometimes it’s harvested without replanting. Sometimes artisans are underpaid, or left behind. Sometimes “sustainable” only lives in the label.
We’re not perfect either. But we believe in asking better questions and building better systems, together. Because sustainability isn’t a badge. It’s a commitment.
💬 Let’s talk in the comments. What have you seen, felt, or questioned in your own work?

In many indigenous and rural communities, weaving became one of the ways knowledge moved across generations through hands, repetition, rituals, and everyday life.
Maybe that’s why woven traditions carry something beyond function.

In a world that moves so fast, choosing bamboo can feel like choosing a different rhythm. Slower, more grounded, and more connected to where things come from. For us, bamboo is more than a material. It carries local traditions, human hands, and generations of weaving knowledge into everyday spaces.
Choosing bamboo is also choosing regenerative futures. A material that grows quickly, renews naturally, and reminds us that design can exist with nature, not against it.
Not perfect. Not mass produced. But rooted, honest, and full of soul.

Same material, different rhythms. 🌾
Across Indonesia, bamboo weaving comes in many variations, each shaped by its own region, character, and way of life. With bamboo, every woven pattern carries a distinct identity that makes it feel different from one another. The fun part is that each region also has its own names for these patterns, and sometimes the names themselves sound quite amusing, like mata itik and mata kebo. But that is what makes Indonesian craft culture feel so alive. It is not only woven by hands, but also shaped by local language, habits, and stories. Here are some of the bamboo weaving patterns we use and have documented from our region, as a small glimpse into the richness behind every weave. 🤎

last weekend in singapore 🇸🇬 we came for a workshop but found a living raya, melayu in today’s city. hari raya here felt familiar but also different through the food, the way people gather, as if remembering something together. we hosted bamboo weaving, sat together, guiding hands through patterns and sharing stories with people. it wasn’t just a workshop, it felt like spending a day inside someone else’s way of celebrating familiar but not quite the same.
still thinking about it!

Raden Adjeng Kartini is an Indonesian historical figure whose letters reflected on the roles of women and their desire to learn, think, and be seen more fully. Today, her name is remembered every year, but her questions still continue in different forms. In our daily work, we see that in women weavers. Through their hands, they carry not only skill, but also decisions about how material is shaped, how it holds, and when to stop. They move between land, home, and market with awareness and care, balancing rhythms that require both sensitivity and strength.
This Kartini Day, we invite you to look a little closer. These women are not only making, they are deciding, holding, and sustaining. They support their families, shape daily life, and carry knowledge that allows communities to continue. Around the world, many women, especially those in rural communities, are doing the same: growing food, caring for water, and holding their communities together, often without it being named as leadership. See them beyond their work, beyond the object in your hands. This is how women’s history is lived.
Memperingati Hari Kartini 🌿
