As usual loads going on at St Thomas Library over half term and we are getting outdoors (after you have been to the Library of course!).
Pip, Zenna and Libro have formed 'The Outdoor Explorer Club'. They are getting out and in Devon's beaches and walking trails to see what they can find.
Why not pop into the Library and collect your leaflet - available from Sat, 23rd May - and see what you can find!
These focus on accessible and neurodiverse-friendly areas but are free for everyone.
We will also be having our usual fun with our 'What's on the beach?' Treasure Hunt all week. As well as:
Tuesday:
Bounce & Rhyme - 10:00 & 11:30
Board Games for children (and their adults) - 13:30 - 15:30
Thursday:
Creative Writing Workshop for Kids - 13:00 - 11:45 - FREE - Booking Essential via TicketSource
Messy Thursday - Hand Print Jellyfish - 12:30 - 16:30 - FREE - just drop in
This is my first review for the Adult Reading Challenge/Book Bingo.
I started with 'A Debut Novel' as it seemed appropriate!
If you have not started yet it is blindingly simple:
Collect a leaflet from the Library and get reading -
1. Read a book on one of our themes
2. Come in and get your stamp
3. Do this 8 times (or 12 if you are going for the full whack!)
4. Return your leaflet and be entered into the Prize draw
Runs May - October
We need books!
The Friends of St Thomas Library are having a BookSale at the Birdhouse Cafe on Saturday, 30th May (10:00 - 13:00 if you fancy popping by!).
And we really need some books to sell, so what better time to have a spring clean than now!
Good quality books - either for adults or children - would be really appreciated.
Please drop them off at St Thomas Library (there is a little car park so you can drop off easily) any time before the 28th May.
We are having a (hopefully) temporary problem with our printer!
We are trying to fix it as soon as possible but if you were planning on printing today there might be a problem.
Exeter Library are printing away brilliantly and would love to help you out with anything!
Hopefully we are up and running again tomorrow!
This evening at 6.30 St Thomas Library's very own Jez will be heading to the big library up town to 'interview' his pal Johnny Mains (lightly cuing might be more accurate).
The estimable Mr Mains was included in the Plymouth Herald's '50 coolest people' list a few years back and earlier this year appeared in the Observer, where he was described as 'an affable Scotsman' (an accurate assessment).
Johnny is a true afficionado of horror, supernatural and weird fiction and film, and has edited 5 volumes in the British Library's themed collections of weird fiction (all available in Devon Libraries!) He also edited, alongside his friend Robin Ince, two volumes of horror stories by comedians, gathering together the likes of Stewart Lee, Katy Brand, Al Murray, Sara Pascoe and Reece Shearsmith and encouraging them to let loose their inner demons.
Johnny will talk of many things in his irrepressibly enthusiastic and passionate way, including his recent British Library anthology Dead of Summer: Strange Tales of May Eve and Midsummer; and you'll get a chance to buy the book on the night and get Johnny to sign it.
So head up town to discover things ghostly, uncanny and strange. You can find tickets here: /whats-on/exeter/exeter-library/author-talk-the-dead-of-summer-with-johnny-mains/e-mjbmlz
I found this book when I was looking through our fabulous picture book collection.
It made me think- we all have days like this but usually it turns out we don't hate everything after all!
Find books like this one in our Wellbeing Box - a way to start a conversation with kids about tricky times and feelings - the books are here to help.
And if you can't find what you are looking for, ask at desk and we will see what we can find for you.
Want to understand your heart health better? Your Doctor asked for Blood Pressure Readings?
Why not borrow a Blood Pressure Monitor from the Library for FREE?
We are proud to offer blood pressure monitors at all our libraries.
