I am deeply saddened by the news that the music world has lost the legendary Candy John Carr. I met Candy John in my first few weeks in NYC in September, 2009. I was of course familiar with his work as the brilliant percussionist on all Donovan’s seminal tracks, and recognized him immediately from the iconic cover of Donovan’s 1970 album, “Open Road.” By the time we met, he was well known in the NYC live music scene. He often backed other musicians playing in Manhattan and would jump on stage to do his own sets of his songs which embodied truth, love and the triumph of optimism over cynicism. He got such a kick out of being asked about his years in “swinging London,” and it was an honor to be on hand for several gigs where he and Donovan reunited.
We worked on several projects together, but I am so proud of the fact that Ship to Shore PhonoCo was able to coordinate and release Candy’s solo album, “The Candy John Album,” and immortalize his songs on vinyl - the way music was meant to be heard! Produced by Richard Barone, it features 10 of his finest songs which embody his free, loving and brilliant spirit. I'm posting here some outtakes I took on LomoChrome Purple film from his album cover shoot... he was such a character and a joy to be around!
