Training for a race and looking for ways to improve your training? Here’s how a VO₂ max test can be beneficial. A VO₂ max test is a graded treadmill stress test where speed and/or incline progressively increase while oxygen intake and carbon dioxide output are measured. The test determines the maximum amount of oxygen the body can utilize during intense exercise and can also identify thresholds. The data is used to establish individualized heart rate training zones to optimize performance and conditioning. For my VO₂ max test, my score was 41.5, which places me in the good fitness category based on my age and normative data. My anaerobic threshold heart rate was 179 bpm, which represents the intensity at which fatigue begins to accumulate more rapidly and effort becomes harder to sustain for long periods. Training at and above this threshold, using structured intervals or fartlek-style workouts, can help improve my ability to tolerate higher intensities. As for my recovery data, it shows that I recover about 35% after one minute and 55% after two minutes. Interested in checking out your VO₂ max results, contact us!
