Charles Lumar II (@stringsfallapart ) is a composer, musician, teacher, and explorer based in Durham, North Carolina. Deeply curious and versatile, he spent his time at Vashon Artist Residency dissecting compositions, exploring ceramics and layering music onto natural objects.
Both a generative artist and performer, most often on double bass, electric bass, or tuba, Charles has had his compositions premiered by the National Symphony Orchestra and the Louisiana Philharmonic. He has performed and recorded with artists including People Museum, Solange, and Kristin Diable, and toured internationally, appearing at the Kennedy Center, Radio City Music Hall, the Guggenheim, the Getty Museum, Glastonbury Festival, and on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Beyond music, Charles crafts visual works and pairs his sound with imagery and film. Recently selected for the Castle of Our Skins Black Composer Miniature Challenge 2.0, he has also been in residence at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and The League of Stars.

Charles Lumar II is a Northwest Arkansas based composer, musician, teacher and explorer. He expresses himself in whatever medium seems up to the task but can primarily be found playing a double bass, an electric bass or a tuba.
Charles has had works premiered by the National Symphony Orchestra and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in addition to performing and recording with People Museum, Solange and Kristin Diable (to name a few). He has also toured the world playing shows at notable venues including the Kennedy Center, Radio City Music Hall, the Guggenheim, The Getty Museum, Glastonbury Festival and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
When not creating or performing music, Charles enjoys making visual art and matching his music to compelling images and videos. Charles was recently selected as a composer for Castle of Our Skins’ Black Composer Miniature Challenge 2.0 in addition to being accepted into residencies at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Vashon Artist Residency, and The League of Stars Astro-Retreat and Art-Residency.
Charles is inspired by the stars, birds singing, and his mother, Elaine.
