Pure and simple, my obsession with exercise started with vanity! When I was young, I was so insecure about my hip width. I was painfully jealous of girls with narrow hips. I wanted to wear half shirts with low-rise jeans, like Britney Spears circa 1999. I turned 40 and finished giving birth to three beauties (hah, thank God for my birthing hips). I was now going to change my hips! Extreme cardio—that’s the answer, right? Hmm… a little. I lost weight but was exhausted and puffy in places I didn’t want puffiness. But I still had pointy hips. Why?
God gave me this bone structure, and I can’t change that, but I can create the illusion that I did.
Enter strength training and a strict diet of counting macros (zero starvation). I started training my upper body consistently. Leg day, of course, is my favorite workout, but training my arms meant I created broader shoulders, a V-shaped back, and a smaller-looking waistline. Guess what happened? The illusion of smaller hips.
At 51, I have completely moved on from hip width. Now it’s about functionality, living at a younger biological age, and achieving mental strength. This is what “BUILDING 4” is all about. The goals, no matter your age, never end. You keep growing and growing. This lifestyle is never boring.

As much as we love Pilates for posture and core strength, it’s important to remember that achieving a lean, elongated physique also requires calorie maintenance, low body fat levels, and—most importantly—consistent hypertrophy through weight-bearing exercise.
In other words, ballerinas develop their physiques through years of hyperextended movement patterns, long hours of muscle isolation, and progressive overload. The more they practice, the more lean muscle they build.
For women who don’t have 4–5 hours a day to train like a ballerina, strength training is the most efficient alternative. Lean muscle can be built in less time through heavier weights and progressive overload. Forty-five minutes of Pilates a day alone is not the answer.
