Thank you to everyone who came to our opening last Friday, it was really fun and only mildly nerve-wracking to watch everyone interact with the space. Baby Margaret stole the show, of course.
Hey! If you’re in Birmingham over the next week, you should go see my and Julie’s exhibit at BSC, we spent months working on it and we’re really proud of how it turned out. Here’s a little video preview of it. You can visit it at Durbin Gallery weekdays 9am - 4:30pm, through October 27th. We’ll also be doing a gallery talk at 11am on October 25th.
This is episode No. 47 of Old Scout. It’s long (link’s in bio) But! It has chapters, so feel free to skip around. In this episode, we start our collection of rocks, minerals, and fossils. Christian demonstrates mineral characteristics, then we go on a couple adventures. First, we got quite a haul at the Philadelphia Mineral Treasures And Fossil Fair. Next, we headed to the Franklin Mineral Museum in Franklin, NJ where we collected some specimens ourselves. We went on a self-guided geological tour in Wissahickon Valley Park. Finally we excavated some fossils(!) at the Montour Preserve Fossil Pit. Then all we had to do was build a suitable house to highlight the collection.

Leaves 🍁 It makes me giggle that the mini plant press like spits out and then gobbles up the leaf cards.
Also, you should go to bioquip.com and buy you a mini plant press for 5 dollars and 15 cents and keep it in your bag and pick up leaves and press them and feel like a mini biologist
