René Lalique glass are masterful pieces that balance form and function, and are the defining highlight of the online auction, 100 Years: Lalique, Silver and Art from the collection of Vera Dubin. The sale boasts several sought-after pieces produced only during the revolutionary designer’s lifetime. The Gros Scarabées vase (Lot 6), a rare pre-war closed model, is distinguished by its bold relief of scarabs in rich amber, while the Domrémy vase (Lot 21) is notable for its unusual silver collar and delicately rendered thistles. Together with his opalescent ‘Formose’ vase (Lot 1) and its swirling carp motif, these sculptural vessels hold enduring appeal a century on and exemplify the bond between Art Deco and the natural world. The furniture and ceramics on offer in Deep Roots: Selected Works from Stephan and Carmen Welz were assembled over a lifetime by one of South Africa's most legendary auctioneers, whose aesthetic education began in childhood in a home where Irma Stern and Walter Battiss were frequent houseguests. The furniture consignment reflects Welz's deep appreciation for period furnishings, offering a 14-seater dining-room table, military and naval chests, Cape chairs, a writing bureau, and more. The ceramics range from blue-and-white porcelain and flat-back Victorian figures to oriental plates and vases. Together, these decorative items are curated into intimate room displays by Wilhelm van Rensburg at Strauss & Co's Houghton gallery. A seated woman was a compelling motif that sculptor Sydney Kumalo frequently revisited. From 1959 to 1970, the artist created six different versions of this form. The present lot, conceived in 1959, is the earliest iteration, and is particularly significant, especially rare and important. Discover the compelling story of this magnificent sculpture, feautred on the Evening Sale, as Dr Alastair Meredith speaks to the work and its history. Did you know? This is the Colour Me series by Berni Searle, one of the most significant and celebrated bodies of work in South African art history. The Colour Me series, created between 1998 and 2000, saw Searle photographed with her body outlined or adorned in different coloured spices, materialised in life-size digital prints. The coloured spices allude to the racial classifications imposed under apartheid, and also to the movement of both spices and slaves during colonial regimes. As a mixed-race person growing up during apartheid in South Africa, Searle was categorised as “Coloured”. This was a label she later rejected and challenged through her art. In the present work, she undermines this very languaging and system of categorisation by inhabiting every colour at once, refusing the taxonomy that sought to define her. It was at the Cairo Biennale in 1998/9 that Searle first exhibited the work to international audiences, winning a UNESCO/AICA Award and propelling her into the global art world. Nearly three decades later, Searle’s self-portraiture currently features in the main exhibition of the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, In Minor Keys, curated by Koyo Kouoh. On offer in our flagship live Evening Sale auction, taking place in Johannesburg on 26 May 2026. Dr Vera Dubin was born in Dvinsk, Latvia, in 1925. She arrived in South Africa at the age of one, and from the very beginning, her character announced itself. At seven, she wrote to South African artist Hugo Naudé seeking to buy one of his paintings with money she had raised from her classmates to brighten their classroom. She qualified as a doctor at the University of Cape Town in 1948, one of only two women in her graduating class, going on to specialise in dermatology across both government hospitals and private practice. Art and medicine were never separate pursuits for Vera. With her husband Abe, she travelled widely and built a collection of exceptional depth and discernment, centred on pre-1945 René Lalique glass, European silver, and paintings by South African and European artists including Francis Bacon, Jean Welz, Andrew Verster and Rodolphe Théophile Bosshard. Her cultural legacy extended far beyond her own walls. She led the Friends of the Durban Art Gallery, serving as its honorary life president, and in 1982 founded the Friends of Music bringing world-renowned musicians to Durban and nurturing emerging local talent. She was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship by Rotary International in recognition of her contributions. Dr Vera Dubin passed away on 24 August 2025, at the age of 100 — a milestone she had always vowed to reach. Her collection is now offered as a single estate sale. It's May Auction Season! 🔨 And of course I have a favorite... Deborah Bell, Las Meninas/Caesura R600 000 - 800 000 Deborah Bell references the famous and mysterious master Deigo Velasquez's work "Las Meninas" in this painting. A work nearly every art historian is fascinated by and here Bell brings it to life in her own way. Removing all the figures, creating an almost airy space that just draws you in. She references the iconic Infanta in her white dress in one of the paintings hanging on the wall, as well as Michelangelo’s 'Creation of Adam'. The other paintings references her own works while a figure standing in the door alludes to transcendence which is a common theme for the artist. The painting featured in the Everard Read 2015 exhibition 'Dreams of Immortality' A painting we can talk and write about endlessly, I am really enjoying this piece hanging in our gallery. Currently open for viewing. Auction: 26 May 2026, Johannesburg #DeborahBell #LasMeninas #painting #history
